Karen Mulroy achieved peak fitness with Flipping 50, culminating in a one-day rim-to-river-to-rim hike of the Grand Canyon at age 66. By transitioning from high-stress 'death marches' to hormone-balancing strength training and programmed recovery, she built more muscle and vitality than she possessed in her youth, overcoming chronic burnout and injury.

The interview

What was your life like before working with Flipping 50 and Debra Atkinson?

I was in a perpetual state of code red with work demands, long hours, stress, and constant anxiety over my parents' health. I was an attorney with a busy litigation practice living on a diet of chocolate and coffee at work, feeling myself losing control and losing fitness.

What was the turning point that made you realize you needed to make a change?

My executive assistant, who was 61 and appeared strong and healthy, passed away in her sleep. Facing her mortality and that of my aging parents served as a huge wake-up call that I needed to make significant changes in my own life.

What made you decide to say yes to working with Debra?

My own plan wasn't working, and what Debra said on her channel resonated with me in a way nothing else had. Her philosophy held infinite hope and possibilities for me over the course of my lifetime, and I realized the investment was small when amortized over my life.

What surprised you most about the Flipping 50 program?

Debra is incredibly relatable and non-judgmental, and her instructions are so well-executed that you can't make a mistake. I was also surprised by the concept of programming rest and recovery days; I used to think if I wasn't doing a 'death march' on the treadmill, I wasn't trying hard enough.

How has your approach to nutrition and fitness changed?

I am thinking more about what I put into my body and eating more protein to meet my body's needs and build muscle. I am probably fitter than I've ever been in my life, including when I was younger, because I didn't have the full component of exercises back then.

What is a specific physical achievement you've reached since starting the program?

Last year, at the age of 66, I hiked the Grand Canyon from rim to river to rim in one day. It was the hardest thing I'd ever done physically, but the most emotionally rewarding because I stretched myself beyond my possibilities, which wouldn't have been possible without Debra's coaching.

What advice would you give to someone on the fence about joining?

It's never too late to improve, get strong, and get healthy. Debra teaches you how to age successfully by focusing on cardiovascular fitness, bone density, and muscle strength so that your body can keep the appointments your mind makes.

Frequently asked

Is the cost of Flipping 50 worth the investment for long-term health?

Karen Mulroy noted that while she had to make a conscious decision to invest, the cost amortized over a lifetime of health was not significant. She viewed it as a commitment to being 'in it for a lifetime' to ensure her body could keep up with her mind as she aged.

Can you get better fitness results by working out less intensely?

Yes, Karen found that 'working smarter, not necessarily harder' through Debra's program yielded better results. She moved away from 'frenetic and exhausting' treadmill sessions to a structured plan that included essential rest and recovery days.

Is it too late to start strength training in your 60s?

Karen believes it is never too late to improve, get strong, or build muscle. She achieved her highest level of fitness at age 66, surpassing the physical condition she had as a younger gymnast and diver.

Full transcript

Before working with Flipping 50 and Deborah, I was in a perpetual state of code red. I had work demands, long hours, stress, constant anxiety over my parents health. And I lived on a diet of chocolate and coffee when I was at work. And I felt myself losing control and losing fitness. I was an attorney with a busy litigation practice. On top of that I was a daughter with the most amazing but aging parents. And I was watching them physically decline, feeling helpless about it, trying to help them through their issues. I just feeling like I wasn't succeeding on any level. Then I got a reality check and a huge wake up call. My longtime friend and my executive assistant at work didn't show up for work for two days, and we became concerned. We called police to do a welfare check. And I met police at her house, and we found that she had passed away in her sleep. She was 61. She was strong, she was dynamic, she was slim. She was smart, and she was gone. And at that point I decided that I had to face my own mortality as well as that of my parents. And I needed to make some changes that were going to be pretty significant in my life. And that's when I decided to contact Debra and ask her to train me and join Flipping 50. What made me say yes to working with Debra was obviously my own plan wasn't working. What she said on her channel resonated with me and made sense to me in a way that nothing else had. Her philosophy and her programs held infinite hope and possibilities for me over the course of my lifetime. And I just had to make the decision to go with it. I was going to be in it for a lifetime. And the cost of the investment amortized over my life was really not that significant once you thought about it in that way. When I was younger, I did gymnastics, I did diving. And I was following programs that I thought were helping me. And I was probably doing myself more harm than good. I tended to burn out, overtrain, get injured, and not meet my own internal expectations of what I should be doing. What surprised me the most about working with Debra and the Flipping 50 program is that Debra is so relatable, non judgmental. Everything that she does is well executed, well queued, well planned, and you know that if you follow her instructions, you're really not going to make a mistake. The other thing that surprised me is the idea that you would actually program rest and recovery days into your week. That was a concept that was foreign to me, because if you weren't doing the death march every day on the treadmill, you weren't working hard enough, you weren't trying hard enough. And so that was kind of insane to me that I was actually getting better results, but working smarter, not necessarily harder. Although I did put the effort in with the weight training and everything that she had in the program, but it just wasn't as frenetic and exhausting to me as it had been. What I'm able to do now that I couldn't do before I started working with Debra is I'm thinking more about what I put into my body. I'm eating more protein to meet my body's needs and build muscle. I am probably fitter than I've ever been in my life, including when I was younger, because I didn't have the full component of exercises. And if I knew then what I know now, it might have been a lot different. What I found is last year, at the age of 66, I hiked the Grand Canyon from rim to river to rim in one day. And it was the hardest thing that I'd ever done physically, but the most emotionally rewarding thing that I've ever done, because I stretched myself beyond my possibilities. And it wouldn't have been possible without Deborah and her coaching. If someone's on the fence about working with Debra, I would say it's never too late to improve, and it's never too late to get strong and healthy. We all age, but Debra has taught me that you could age well and age gracefully and successfully if you do the right things. And that's cardiovascular fitness, bone density, muscle strength, maintaining and building muscle strength. It's never too late to do that. My parents were an inspiration to me. They were 97 and 98 when they passed away. Four months apart. They were devoted to each other. My father did tell me, it's really hard when your mind makes an appointment that your body can't keep. And that kind stuck in my head. And so the takeaway message is, do everything that you can now to make sure that you can keep the appointments that your mind makes, both now and in the future. And Debra can help you get there.
