The interview

What was your world like before working with Heather?

My world before working with Heather was very much consumed with being raised with a mother who later in life, became a hoarder. I was overweight and I had been attempting to lose weight for quite a while. I felt heavy and I felt stuck, I felt ashamed, I felt overwhelmed a lot of the time and none of those things really gave me the hope and the lightness that I needed.

What was the experience of working with Heather like for you?

I found working with Heather, the reframe was just so light and lacked any sense of shame or judgment. I loved that Heather uses her own experience in her work and so I don't feel as if she's a so-called 'authority figure' that's going to be trying to fix me or change me. She has a wonderful model that I need to focus on the things that I want to make lighter in my life so I'm able to become more authentically me.

How did the group environment impact your progress?

I've been in group work for long enough and noticed showing up for the group, it's another way of dissolving shame. I had already shown myself that I couldn't do it on my own and that I needed the love and the power and the presence of Heather's unflagging inspiration and enthusiasm for her work and her life to kind of lift me and keep me connected.

What specific physical results did you achieve?

I was able to actually release and let go of 30 pounds that felt really heavy. Heather inspired me to release that weight and embrace a way of eating that never has me feeling hungry. I have maintained this weight loss for a year now and I continue to embrace it and really be grateful for a body that works well and gives me enough energy.

How did the program help you with physical clutter?

I had a friend who gave me armloads and armloads and armloads of beautiful clothing that was very expensive and so I was able to, with Heather's help, to really sift through those clothes. Decluttering is really about healing and becoming more present and more alive.

How does your life feel now compared to before?

It feels lighter. It feels like it's not as challenging to do the things that I need to do. And when I'm doing what I say I'm going to do and I'm living in integrity, I feel lighter, it feels better. It also feels better trying on my clothes in the morning.

What would you say to someone who is on the fence about joining?

I would just say, do it. Let go, jump off, sign up, put the dates in your calendar and make it a big priority, because it's one of the best investments that I've made. If I was on the fence about doing it, I would let go, and sign up for the program and pay attention to how much lighter you're going to feel as you continue to show up with Heather.

Frequently asked

Is the School of Living Lighter just another restrictive diet program?

No. Lindsay Hutchins reports that the program inspired her to embrace a way of eating that never leaves her feeling hungry. She describes the approach as a 'reframe' that lacks shame or judgment, focusing on lightness rather than restriction.

Can I succeed in this program if I've failed to lose weight on my own?

Lindsay Hutchins noted that she had already shown herself she couldn't do it alone before joining. She found that the 'love, power, and presence' of the group environment and Heather’s inspiration were essential to keeping her connected and successful.

Will the coach judge me if I have a lot of clutter or weight to lose?

Lindsay felt that because Heather Aardema shares her own personal experiences and past struggles, she does not act as a judgmental 'authority figure.' Instead, Lindsay found the environment to be one where sharing is encouraged and shame is dissolved.

Well, I love it that Heather creates an environment where sharing is a really encouraged thing. I would just say, do it. Let go, jump off, sign up, put the dates in your calendar and make it a big priority, because it's one of the best investments that I've made. Heather used to be just like me. and if I was on the fence about doing it, I would let go, and sign up for the program and pay attention to how much lighter you're going to feel as you continue to show up with Heather. So my world before working with Heather was very much consumed with being raised with a mother who later in life, became a hoarder. I was overweight and I had been attempting to lose weight for quite a while. I found working with Heather, the reframe was just so light and lacked any sense of shame or judgment. Yeah, I felt heavy and I felt stuck, I felt ashamed, I felt overwhelmed a lot of the time and none of those things really gave me the hope and the lightness that I needed to do to continue on my path and Heather really helped me with that. Well, I loved that Heather uses her own experience in her work and so I don't feel as if she's a so called "authority figure" that's going to be trying to fix me or change me. I feel like Heather works in a way inviting and inspiring and sharing her own experience which tells me that I know, for sure, she's not judging or, you know, it's very clear to me when working with Heather that she loves the work that she's doing. And she has a wonderful model that I need to focus on the things that I want to make lighter in my life so I'm able to become more authentically me. I've been in group work for long enough and noticed showing up for the group, it's another way of dissolving shame and I had already shown myself that I couldn't do it on my own and that I needed the love and the power and the presence of Heather's unflagging inspiration and enthusiasm for her work and her life to kind of lift me and keep me connected. So, I was able to actually release and let go of 30 pounds that felt really heavy. And I'm a 69-year old woman, and I want to live for a long time and I want to actually be an example of what living vibrantly and lighter is. Heather inspired me to release that weight and embrace a way of eating that never has me feeling hungry. I have maintained this weight loss for, a year now and I continue to embrace it and really be grateful for a body that works well and gives me enough energy to do what I need to do throughout the day. I had a friend who gave me armloads and armloads and armloads of beautiful clothing that was very expensive and so I was able to, with Heather's help, to really sift through those clothes. I I was inspired. I was able to identify with the other group members, as I was able to identify with Heather sharing her experience and it just enabled me to know that I was doing the very best I could on a daily basis, and so were they. I just didn't expect her to be so vibrantly filled with life and enthusiasm in a long-term way for her program, despite her health challenges. And so, really, decluttering is really about healing and becoming more present and more alive. Well, how it feels to be walking around my home and walking around in my body without those 30 extra pounds. It feels lighter. It feels like it's not as challenging to do the things that I need to do. And when I'm doing what I say I'm going to do and I'm living in integrity, I feel lighter, it feels better. It also feels better trying on my clothes in the morning. Hi there. My name is Lindsey Hutchins. I'm a clinical social worker, and I live in San Francisco and I'm previously from the East Coast, where I'm about to move back to.
