The interview
Who are you and where are you from?
I'm Mahnaz Gorgani. I'm a pediatric dentist, and I live in Bay Area, California, Palo Alto.
What led you to join the Urban Monk Academy and seek testing?
Before the retreat, I joined Dr. Shojai's Urban Monk Academy, and before that, I learned that he does gut testing. I did his gut testing, the permeability and all of that, and I found out that I'm sensitive to turmeric. We're Persian; I add turmeric to all of our food. I really didn't think I was allergic to anything, but I was getting some migraine headaches.
Why did you decide to attend the physical retreat?
This actually prompted me to want to go to his retreat to find out more, and I found out his retreat is about Qigong and meditation and breathing, which I'm very much into. A lot of famous functional doctors have these huge retreats, and I didn't think I wanted to go because they are so big. But when I found out his retreats are very limited to who can attend, I'm like, oh my God, I wanna go.
What was your first impression of the retreat environment?
When I first arrived and I met him, I said, 'Wow, this is a hidden gem.' It was very cozy. The food was amazing because I'm very much into healthy food. People were very nice; these are all like-minded people. You can connect to people easily.
How was the Qigong instruction different at the retreat?
Qigong, I had heard of it, but when you're in this retreat, it's just a different energy. It's different how he shows every little single move, where your hand's supposed to be, how your movement's supposed to be. This was just amazing.
What did you learn about the connection between energy and health?
He was teaching us that you could have blocked energy. Let's say you have some medical issue; these all have root causes, but blocked energy is actually a big root cause of your issues. Having a doctor who is so updated in all the new science and medical technology and presents you with 5,000-year-old Qigong tells us a lot.
How do you feel now that the retreat has concluded?
Since the retreat, I feel more awakened, and I feel I can work for the energy that I already have more and improve it. He emphasizes you can't just listen or just do it once or twice. You have to keep doing it. I just started the 100-day gong yesterday.
Frequently asked
Are health retreats too large to get personal attention from the doctor?
Mahnaz was initially hesitant because many famous functional doctors host huge retreats where it is hard to ask questions. She chose Urban Monk Productions because the retreats are limited in size, allowing her to connect directly with Dr. Shojai and other attendees.
Can gut testing identify unexpected food sensitivities?
Yes, Mahnaz discovered through Dr. Shojai's permeability testing that she was sensitive to turmeric, a staple in her Persian diet. Removing this trigger helped address her migraine headaches and other health issues.
What is the 100-day gong practice mentioned by Urban Monk?
Mahnaz explains that Dr. Shojai teaches a 'gong' practice that requires 100 days of consistency. She notes that this daily commitment is the hardest part but is essential for improving energy, mental health, and physical strength.
