Chris Nicholson reviewed Geobear after his London home suffered subsidence due to shrinking clay soil. Geobear utilized geopolymer resin injection to stabilize the foundation, successfully closing structural cracks in the bay window and bathroom ceiling while returning floors to level. The non-disruptive process provided a faster, modern alternative to traditional underpinning without requiring deep excavation.

The interview
What was the initial problem you noticed with your property?
At the front of my house, there's a lot of clay soil. The hot, dry summer we had, it shrank the clay soil and my bay window had started cracking, specifically around the brick piers. The cracks were widening and I started getting really, really frightened.
What were your biggest concerns regarding the damage?
My biggest concerns were that the cracks were widening. I spent money on the brickwork, the stonework, the windows, and suddenly all of that is in jeopardy. This was threatening my ability to provide for my family as your house is the foundation of your net worth.
Why did you decide against traditional underpinning?
If I was going to be doing traditional underpinning, we're talking about excavating at the front of my property, right under the boundary wall, to a depth of over two meters. That's a huge concern to my neighbors and would take a huge amount of time with huge disruption.
How did you discover the polymer resin solution?
I started talking to surveyors and structural engineers. They measured the cracks and the size of the issue, and they said that for where I am and how close my neighboring properties are, traditional underpinning isn't the solution. We needed to think about something more modern like polymer resin injection.
What was your experience working with the Geobear team?
GeoBear were on it and incredibly supportive. I wanted to make sure my neighbors were okay with the treatment plan, and GeoBear were so quick in coming back to me that I was almost holding them back. The team was always touching base to make sure I was okay with the process.
What are the results now that the work is complete?
My house is almost back to the way it was. The cracks have all closed up—the ones in the bay window and the ones in the ceiling in the bathroom where it was getting pulled away. My floors have come back to level. It really feels like things are coming back to how they were.
Frequently asked
Will foundation repair disrupt my neighbors or require deep excavation?
Chris Nicholson was concerned that traditional underpinning would require excavating over two meters deep right under his boundary wall. He found that Geobear's polymer resin injection was a modern, non-disruptive solution that avoided these consequences for his neighbors.
Can geopolymer injection actually close existing structural cracks?
Yes, Chris reported that the cracks around his bay window and bathroom ceiling have 'all closed up' following the treatment. While the lines are still visible and require minor cosmetic repair, the structural gaps were successfully sealed.
Is Geobear more supportive than insurance companies during subsidence issues?
According to Chris Nicholson, Geobear was 'far more supportive' than any insurance company he dealt with. He noted they were incredibly responsive, often waiting on him to get neighbor approval rather than the other way around.
