The interview
What has your overall experience been like with the people at Vector?
The people 100% are my second family. I get emotional talking about this because it's a truly life-changing experience. My mentors are just the best human beings. When I come back to school from Boston to Maryland, the first people I see aren't even my high school friends; it's my Cutco friends, managers, and old coworkers because that connection is just so deep.
What are you currently studying and what skills have you gained?
I'm studying marketing, applied psychology, and human development. I started about two and a half years ago. I've gained soft skills that are not normally found in a college classroom or textbook, but also confidence. I was pretty shy in high school and an introvert, but being able to express my opinions and thoughts with coworkers and clients has been really helpful.
What was your work situation before joining Vector Marketing?
Before Vector, I worked at a small little preschool. It was below minimum wage—not even sure how that was allowed. I wanted more financial freedom so I could help my parents out and afford living in Boston and saying 'yes' to things I wanted to do there during my first year.
How did you get started with the company and what is your current role?
I got a message on LinkedIn about the position and thought I could do marketing. I haven't looked back since. Now, 2 1/2 years later, I am a full-time manager managing one of the top offices in the country.
What is a memorable experience you've had with a customer?
I had a customer that had their grandma's Cutco from 1950, so 75 years old. I helped them replace it all for free and get a new set for their house because they just got married and had their first kid. Seeing social proof like people owning the product for 50+ years really helps me.
What were the main benefits of the sales representative role?
Honestly, just the flexibility. As a sales rep, I had the freedom to do whatever I wanted. I loved how there were no minimums, maximums, or quotas. I didn't feel pressured to perform; it was mostly an internal motivation thing.
What advice would you give to someone considering joining?
Might as well just try it. If it isn't for you, no worries. But whatever you're studying, these are soft skills you just need to have, like talking to people over the phone and having professional face-to-face human interactions. Being able to form a relationship and a connection is an undervalued skill.
