The interview
Can you introduce yourself and your professional background?
My name is Joey Gdovin. I'm a licensed chemical dependency counselor located outside of San Antonio and Spring Branch. I've been working in the field for approximately seven and a half, almost eight years now, coming from the substance abuse realm.
Why did you choose to work with Birches Health?
I wanted more of that work-life balance to be entirely honest with you, so that I can go see my family in between sessions. That was also really important, being able to work from home and still be a little bit more engaged with family.
What are the common struggles of the individuals you work with?
I work with individuals struggling with gambling addiction in all varying degrees. Usually it funnels down into the same thing: this has become too much and I need to take some action. It is much more than just losing finances; they are losing relationships and losing time.
How does silence affect the recovery process?
Addiction thrives in silence. The longer you stay in silence, the longer you're going to suffer. Recovery comes from being able to learn to open up and connect and realize you're not alone. We need to address those cycles of shame, secrecy, or embarrassment.
What is 'emotional hijacking' in the context of gambling?
It's that emotional hijacking where you go from proactively thinking about how you're going to gamble in a more responsible way to just reacting to how you're gambling in the moment. It causes individuals to act more impulsively, take out more money, and chase the illusion that a few more spins will get them back to where they were.
How do you help patients confront the reality of their financial situation?
Most individuals just rattle off a guesstimate number for their debt. When they put pen to paper and actually lay all that out in an Excel sheet or a piece of paper and write out what's owed, where, and how much, it becomes the visual aid for them to stop chasing the illusion of losses.
What is the connection between substance abuse and gambling addiction?
The two are very synonymous. I've seen people stop drinking and start gambling, or stop gambling and start drinking. We're giving up one behavior to replace it with another unhealthy behavior to cope. If we address the unhealthy behavior and ways to cope, the hope is you don't turn to other maladaptive coping skills.
What advice do you give to those starting their recovery journey?
You don't have to do this alone. My big thing is hitting one little micro goal daily across mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional areas. It doesn't have to be a grandiose change overnight, but if it's 1% better today than the day before, you're moving in the right direction.
Frequently asked
Is there specialized help available specifically for gambling addiction?
Yes. Joey Gdovin notes that many patients previously struggled to find help because psychiatrists often didn't understand the addiction component and GA meetings felt foreign. Birches Health fills this gap by providing specific dialogue and understanding of how gambling affects the individual.
How does Birches Health help patients visualize their gambling debt?
Joey Gdovin explains that while most individuals only have a 'guesstimate' of their debt, he has them put pen to paper using Excel sheets or paper to lay out exactly what is owed. This creates a visual aid that helps patients stop chasing the illusion of losses.
Can I work with a counselor remotely for gambling addiction?
Yes, Joey Gdovin highlights that the remote nature of Birches Health allows for a better work-life balance, enabling clinicians to be more engaged with family between sessions while still providing high-quality care to those struggling with addiction.
