The interview
What was your life like before attending 40 Years of Zen?
Only six months ago, I was living life with a lot of anxiety and fear, and a deep inability to focus on anything. My life was great, and yet I was rushing to every moment. Every single moment was filled to the brim with activities and thoughts and loops and I was going, going, going. I was always on the run, getting a lot accomplished, but I was always underwater and that left me extremely exhausted.
What made you decide to say yes to the program?
It was an inspiration at the moment. It was as if I knew deep down that it needed to happen. As soon as I found out about it, it kind of happened. Within the week, everything lined up and it worked out greatly. The timing was just perfect, and my husband and I ended up spending our ten-year anniversary in the program.
What did you appreciate most about the program?
What made me appreciate the program the most would be how helpful the staff was, how wonderful our facilitator was, meeting new people, the setting, the attention to detail, and the way it was paced. I really enjoyed it; it was tremendous. The supplements, nutrition, and the beautiful setting overall made it a wonderful retreat.
What are you most excited about moving forward?
I am most excited about practicing all the tools that we were given. They already feel as if they are fully integrated and part of my daily life, so no specific reminder is needed. It's like they are part of my life already. That is a great gift.
What shifted the most for you after going through the program?
What shifted the most for me is a sense of inner peace. It's as if there is this river of calm underneath it all and I can tap into it regardless of what I'm doing, whether I'm being interviewed, working with a client, or sitting in front of the computer. It allows my mind to not have the same level of anxiety.
How will this impact your daily life and perspective?
It will impact my life by sticking to a meditation practice that was on and off for many years. It feels already integrated. Also, my perspective on tasks has shifted; the pressure on getting things done has moved from a sense of dread to a sense of excitement to get to them. I'm a lot more positive now and coming from a more aligned place.
