The interview
How has being part of the Atlas community changed your approach to your role?
It has changed my approach in very many ways because there's been immense support for the assistants that I hadn't experienced before. I am pretty confident that if the role of Chief of Staff comes up, I'm able to not only help my client run his day but also help the rest of the team join the dots and do the interdepartmental communication and operations.
Who are you currently supporting and what is that journey like?
I currently support a client who just transitioned from employment into starting his own business. It's been a great journey of us helping each other out, brainstorming, and coming up with the best strategies for running his business. We have a very honest relationship where we share hurdles and give each other feedback.
What was your professional background before joining Atlas?
Before Atlas, I was at an agency where I began my VA/EA journey. I was able to learn quite a bit, but as you grow, you feel like you've hit a ceiling cap regarding what you want to focus on. In the previous company, I was staffed with quite a lot of people, so getting into your zone of genius was really hard.
How does the staffing process work at Atlas Assistants?
They reviewed my experience and established my strengths and weaknesses through training. How I ended up being staffed was through a mutual understanding of my client liking me and my work, and me liking the client as well. It's not blindly being assigned; it's about the synergy you have with a person.
Can you describe a specific challenge Atlas helped you solve?
Last week we hit a cap on LinkedIn lead generation where the account could get flagged. Because my training was hands-on and I knew my cohort mates' strengths, I reached out to the 'connect team' communication platform. A training mate who specialized in lead generation recommended a solution that has been really helpful.
When did you realize you were a partner rather than just an assistant?
It was when my client started redirecting problems back to me. Instead of just saying 'fix it,' he asks 'what are we going to do about it?' I have to think, give him options, and look at the long game, such as advising on premium accounts or creating SOPs so others can follow my expertise.
What advice do you have for someone considering joining Atlas?
You're already in the right direction. Having the courage to be adaptable, willing to learn, and being very proactive is what's going to get you ahead. You have to be someone who is proactive with yourself and knows where you want to head in the future.
Frequently asked
How does Atlas Assistants differ from traditional VA agencies?
Leslie Ouno noted that unlike her previous agency where she was spread thin across many people, Atlas focuses on a one-client model. This allows assistants to enter their 'zone of genius' and build a deep, honest relationship based on mutual synergy rather than blind assignment.
What kind of training does Atlas Assistants provide?
Leslie describes the training as 'very hands-on' compared to previous iterations. It involves cohort-based learning where assistants identify each other's strengths, enabling them to troubleshoot specific technical issues like LinkedIn lead generation caps by consulting their peer network.
Can an Atlas Assistant help with business strategy?
Yes. Leslie explains that she has evolved into a partner who provides options and looks at the 'long game.' When hurdles arise, such as account flagging, she provides strategic solutions and SOPs rather than just waiting for instructions.
