Chris Dowdall used Geobear to repair a sinking porch at his home in Bromham. Geobear stabilized the foundation and closed a 2.5-centimeter gap using geopolymer injection. The project was completed in a single day, from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, without the disruption or relocation required by conventional underpinning methods.

At a glance

Primary Use Case
Stabilizing a 4.5m x 2.25m porch pulling away from the main house.
Reported Result
Closed a 2.5cm gap and stabilized structural cracks.
Time to Value
One day (approximately 7.5 hours of onsite work).
The porch started pulling away even further and we had two and a half centimetres gap.
With conventional underpinning they quite often make you move out of your house when they do that. But there was no need for anything like that at all.
Everybody understood what they were doing and just did it perfectly.

The interview

How does Geobear's method compare to traditional underpinning?

There are various ways you can underpin houses, and digging down around the foundations either dropping in concrete or pile driving through. A lot of those are much more disruptive and take a very long time, and are more expensive than the injection method that Geobear use.

What specific structural issues were you experiencing at your home?

We have a porch that's about four and a half metres long and two and a quarter metres wide. I noticed we got a crack appearing just inside the main part of the house, and also where the porch was affixed to the wall. You could see there was a gap, a little bit of a gap breaking away. The porch started pulling away even further and we had two and a half centimetres gap.

What was the preparation and inspection process like?

With conventional underpinning they quite often make you move out of your house, but there was no need for anything like that at all. They needed to know where the services were going in—gas, electricity, water. There was also another drain and a soakaway they inspected. People came out there and spent a couple of hours doing it and they were very, very good.

How did the Geobear team communicate the plan to you?

Everybody understood what they were doing. Omar was very good when the guys came out—two people came along—and they walked around and looked at everything and asked me lots of questions. They came inside the house to see where the cracks were. The guy said, 'when we do this, you know, lift up the porch, you might see cracking in this area here on the walls,' and that's exactly where we got some very light cracking.

How long did the actual repair work take on the day?

They were there from quite early morning and finished at about 4:30, so it all went very well. I got a phone call about 8 o'clock in the morning saying they were in a jam on the M25, but they were still here by about 9 o'clock. Everything was fine. They did a good job and they explained everything and showed me what they were going to do.

Frequently asked

Is Geobear less disruptive than traditional underpinning?

Yes. Chris Dowdall noted that conventional underpinning often requires residents to move out of their house, whereas Geobear's injection method required no such relocation and was much faster and less expensive.

How long does a Geobear foundation repair take?

For Chris Dowdall porch project, the team arrived at 9:00 AM and finished by 4:30 PM the same day, providing a significantly faster alternative to traditional digging and concrete methods.

Will Geobear cause more cracks during the lifting process?

Chris Dowdall mentioned that the Geobear technician, Omar, proactively warned him that light cracking might appear in specific areas during the lift. This allowed Chris to be prepared for the minor, expected cosmetic shifts.

Ella Webber (00:00) there are various ways you can underpin houses, and digging down around the foundations either dropping in concrete or pile driving through. There's various things that can be done. A lot of those are much more disruptive and take a very long time, and are more expensive than the injection method that GeoBear use. My name is Chris Dowdall. I live in a village called Bromham in the south of England. we have a porch that's about four and a half metres long and two and a quarter metres wide. I noticed we got a crack appearing just inside the main part of the house, and also where the porch was affixed to the wall. You could see there was a gap, a little bit of a gap breaking away. the porch started pulling away even further and we had two and a half centimetres gap I decided I needed to find somebody that could do something. And I was aware about the kind of work that GeoBear do with the injection system, so I was interested to find more and I started looking online to see what I could find. With conventional underpinning they quite often make you move out of your house when they do that. But there was no need for anything like that at all. So it was just clearing the way. They needed to know where the services were going in, so it's gas, electricity, water, There was also another drain, so from the front of the house the rainwater runs into gutters, and that's taken across the lawn into a soakaway rather than putting it into the sewers. So they inspected that. People came out there and spent a couple of hours doing it and they were very, very good. I mean, starting with Omar who - I mean, everybody understood what they were doing and, you know, Omar was very good when the guys came out - two people came along - and they walked around and looked at everything and asked me lots of questions, and they came inside the house to see where the cracks were inside the house. then, you know, the guy said, "right, when we do this, you know, lift up the porch, you might see cracking in this area here on the walls. but you know, I'm telling you that because that's probably what will happen." And it was nice he did that because that's exactly where we got some very light cracking. and then he explained what they were going to be doing and how, you know, how long it would take. And they were there from quite early morning. and finished at about 4:30, so it all went very well. In addition to that, another thing I appreciated that I don't know how far they travelled but quite a distance, I got a phone call I suppose about 8 o'clock in the morning saying, "I'm really sorry we're going to be a bit late, we're in a jam on the M25." Now the M25 is a good 40 miles from where we are, and they'd hit traffic there but they were still here by about 9 o'clock so Everything was fine. They did a good job and like I said, they explained everything and showed me what they were going to do and how they were going to do it. Everybody understood what they were doing and just did it perfectly.
