The interview

Who are you and where are you from?

Catherin Hartshorn. Berkeley, California.

What are you most excited about following your time here?

I'm most excited about loving myself and my daily life. Part of what I committed was, I want to be light-hearted and playful and not so responsible and burdened down by chores and tasks. So, I want to have more fun.

What are your commitments regarding your health and relationships?

I want to stay healthy and that's a real challenge for me. I'm committed to doing that and then having more fun. People I love, easy to be with, no tension and acrimony among anybody. People want to be around me and want to come hang out.

How has your perspective on difficult future events, like the loss of a spouse, changed?

That my husband... I expect he'll die ahead of me and that's been pretty hard to think about. But now it's like, 'okay, he probably will.' It's going to be really hard but I'm going to be okay. I'm going to have a good life and I'm just continuing to enrich it between now and then.

Is the program as life-changing as it is advertised to be?

Well, it's advertised as it's life changing and I think it is. That's yet to be seen for me because I will see what I do the next few months and years. But it's a place to break through old habits that you haven't been able to change. And to create - to open the vision of 'oh, this is possible.'

What would you say to someone considering 40 Years of Zen?

I would say that people should come to help get them unstuck and move to live the life they want. One of my phrases for myself was, 'I am who I want to be.'
