Kate Lowe, a nurse anesthetist, credits Integrative Health Carolinas for a total transformation in her son’s autism journey. After being told by traditional medicine that options were limited, the practice’s functional approach led to her son moving into a general education setting with minimal symptoms, improved verbal skills, and reduced therapy services.

“This is like the very best investment we could have ever made, I would drain my bank account to do it again because this has made such improvement in our lives.”
“Traditional healthcare clinics told us we didn't have a lot of options... something deep inside my mama heart roared no there is more that I can do for my child.”
The interview
What led you to seek out Integrative Health Carolinas?
Shortly after my youngest was born, we recognized my oldest was displaying symptoms consistent with autism. Traditional Western medicine clinics told us we didn't have a lot of options and just suggested therapies. Something deep inside my mama heart roared no, and I started researching and found Dr. Temple to take a functional medicine standpoint.
What were your first impressions of Dr. Temple?
I really knew she genuinely cared and she wanted to shake up healthcare and do things her way, a good way, a way that was going to really benefit families and kids. In that first initial intake, I could tell she was really invested and willing to do whatever it took, looking at the whole picture to address all of my son's issues.
Did you have any hesitations or skepticism before starting?
Since my husband and I both work in traditional healthcare, we had doubts if there was any validity to any of this. We went in a little bit skeptical, especially since traditional models use insurance and this was a cash pay situation. In reality, this is the very best investment we could have ever made.
How does Dr. Temple manage your child's specific diagnosis?
I'm so impressed how in touch Dr. Temple is with all the current information. She routinely attends annual autism summits to stay up to date with the most current modalities and she'll come back to me with updates on new things to try. She is very open-minded and willing to try different things that have the potential to help without hurting the kids.
What was your son's condition before starting the program?
Before we started seeing Dr. Temple, my oldest son was four years old and his autism was kind of at its peak. He had very minimal verbal skills, he routinely threw tantrums, and life was just really, really challenging with him.
What specific improvements have you seen in your son?
I can't even fathom the changes we've seen in him. Most people now can't even tell that he has autism. He's in a general education setting, we've dropped a lot of our services, and he is just a thriving, happy-go-lucky kid. He's a totally different child.
What would you say to other parents who are skeptical?
Traditional healthcare is going to tell you this doesn't exist or it's too good to be true, but it is absolutely worth a try. Helping these kids from the inside out with the building blocks of nutrition and gut healing leaves so little to lose and so much to gain.
Frequently asked
Is functional medicine for autism valid if I work in traditional healthcare?
Kate Lowe, a nurse anesthetist, was initially skeptical due to her background in traditional Western medicine. However, after seeing significant improvements in her son's verbal skills and behavior through diet and gut healing, she now considers it the best investment her family has ever made.
Is Integrative Health Carolinas worth the out-of-pocket cost?
Despite the practice being a cash-pay model rather than using insurance, Kate stated she would 'drain her bank account to do it again' because of the significant quality-of-life improvements seen in both of her children.
How does Dr. Temple stay current on autism treatments?
Kate notes that Dr. Temple routinely attends annual autism summits to stay up to date with the most current modalities and integrative realms, bringing back new evidence-based options for families to try.
