The interview
What is the mission of CiviCo?
CiviCo is a 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to igniting and uniting cultures of leadership for a better Colorado. Our mission is to bring together the private, nonprofit, and public sector to create civic ownership around our biggest opportunities and challenges in the state. We want to create a civic pathway for every Coloradan.
How does the new website and brand reflect CiviCo's mission?
The first thing the website does is ask you who you are and what type of engagement you're looking for. Creating a site to answer all those questions was nearly impossible because everybody shows up to civic engagement differently. We are so excited about our new web presence that allows folks to jump in, imagine where they might fit into CiviCo right away, and join an event as soon as possible.
Why was launching this new website so important for your organization?
For a nonprofit, often the website gets ignored. Someone goes there once and says it doesn't give them everything they need or they can't find events. That's not the case with this new website. It was important that even folks engaged with us five or ten years ago know that CiviCo is kicking off a new season, and we wanted to show that through this new amazing website.
What is the benefit for the users who visit the new site?
What's in it for them is an easy way to understand where they fit in finding partnership and community so they might be a more effective Coloradan. They are becoming part of an organization that wants to help them build their capacity. This website is that first step to finding a community that I think everyone is really looking for today.
How should someone take the first step to get involved with CiviCo?
Your first step is come to one of our monthly purpose hours. Every month we hold a networking event wrapped around a big topic like mental health, civic ownership, artificial intelligence, or quantum technology. If you hop on our website, the first thing it's going to ask you to do is learn about Purpose Hour and get your free ticket. It is the easiest way to get engaged.
Frequently asked
How can a nonprofit website avoid being ignored by past donors or partners?
DJ Whetter notes that nonprofits often suffer from websites that feel outdated or incomplete. By launching a new site with Up with Ivy, CiviCo signaled a 'new season' for the organization, showing long-term partners that they are modernized and ready for deeper engagement.
Can a website handle multiple different types of user personas effectively?
Yes, DJ Whetter explains that while it was previously 'nearly impossible' to answer everyone's unique 'why,' the new site asks users who they are and what engagement they want immediately, creating a clear pathway for every visitor.
What is the easiest way to get people to join a community through a website?
CiviCo uses their website to drive visitors directly to their monthly 'Purpose Hour.' DJ Whetter states the site makes it easy to learn about the event and get a free ticket, which serves as the primary entry point into their community.
