“I make my own schedule every week. I take the time, I see what I have to do for the week, classes, studying, and then that's when I set the times that I want to actually work.”
“I'm only 18 years old right now... I don't look like or seem like an 18 year old to them, I seem like a colleague that they can go to and reach out to for some advice.”
“My resume is gonna look so, so different than even some of my roommates... and that's gonna put me so ahead for any jobs, any med schools that I really wanna go to.”
The interview
Can you introduce yourself and your background?
My name is Amara, I'm from Miami, Florida, and my college major is nutrition. I'm currently an assistant manager at my Vector office, which is helping me gain manager skills and sales skills that are important in every professional environment.
What were you doing for work before you started with Vector Marketing?
Before Vector, I was working a summer job as a research assistant at my high school's summer research institute. I was mostly helping out with grading papers and worksheets, but I was looking for something I could take with me during college to earn money for my move-in.
How did you react when people told you the company was a scam?
When I was reaching out for my first appointments, friends told me it was a scam or a pyramid scheme. I didn't know what an MLM was at the time, so I asked them for the definitions and compared that to my experience. It really wasn't the same, so I trusted my gut and I'm glad I did because of the opportunities I've had.
Can you share a story about a favorite customer interaction?
I worked with a customer who is opening a Haitian Hall of Fame. I went to her office and she showed me her products and the groups she's working with. She recently contacted me for my input on an event she's holding. Even though I'm only 18, she treats me like a colleague who can offer advice and networking help.
How does the flexibility of the job work with your school schedule?
It is very flexible. I have 17 credits for college right now, and I wouldn't be able to have a normal job at McDonald's or Chick-fil-A because they don't have that flexibility. I make my own schedule every week after seeing what I have to do for classes and studying.
What do you think about the compensation structure at Vector?
You have the opportunity to have a stable income if you're doing the bare minimum, but if you're really developing your skills, you get rewarded for that hard work. I like the reward-based system because I can put in a bunch of work and get a lot more money than someone who is not putting in as much effort.
Why would you recommend this opportunity to other students?
I would recommend it because of the advancement opportunities. I'm an assistant manager now and I'm going to be a branch manager this summer. It provides experience that sets you apart in a stack of resumes, which will put me ahead when applying for jobs or medical school.
Frequently asked
Is Vector Marketing a pyramid scheme or a scam?
Amara initially faced skepticism from friends who called the company a scam or MLM. After researching the definitions and comparing them to her actual experience, she found they did not match and decided to trust her gut, leading to significant professional opportunities.
Can I work at Vector Marketing while taking a full college course load?
Yes, Amara successfully manages her work while taking 17 college credits. She notes that unlike traditional jobs at McDonald's or Chick-fil-A, she makes her own schedule every week based on her classes and study needs.
How does the pay at Vector Marketing compare to retail jobs?
Amara describes a reward-based system where high performance leads to higher earnings. She notes that at a job like Chick-fil-A, she would earn the same as someone putting in half the effort, whereas at Vector, her hard work results in more money.
