The interview
What was your situation before starting with Vector Marketing?
Right before I got started with Vector, I was actually transferring schools and I was unemployed. I was a college football player for a semester, but then ended up deciding that medical bills and student loan debt wasn't a super fun combo. When I came to Black Hills State, I got recommended to Vector by a friend and figured I'd give it a shot instead of just going to stock shelves at Safeway again.
How did you first hear about the company and what were your initial thoughts?
Vector found me through a friend recommendation in high school, but I didn't take it then because I was busy with sports. Later, I was recommended again. My parents had bought a set from a classmate and loved it, so I figured I could probably sell it. My friend who recommended me wasn't a big fan and just put me on a PR list, and I'd seen the online scrutiny like pyramid scheme accusations, but I figured I'd rather find out for myself.
What specifically made you decide to give Vector a try?
What made me give it a try was going to my interview and talking with Nick. He was really great, very personal, and made me feel like I was actually cared about, which I didn't think I was going to feel based on what I'd seen before. My parents also encouraged me because they knew I wanted to work in our family business and that sales would be a good avenue for field work.
Can you share a memorable story from a presentation?
I met a guy in Rapid City for an in-person meeting. While getting the knives out of the car, one of the knives actually cut my arm and I had to get it stapled up before I could start. I told him about my passions and dreams and how Vector was helping me out. Even though his wife wasn't there, he ended up getting a Cali set. They still love their stuff to this day.
What has surprised you the most about your journey with Vector?
What surprised me the most was the people. Everyone I met had their own story, and hearing how everyone came to the company was awesome. It really helped me build my communication skills. I was very introverted before I started, and having an environment that is competitive yet fun where knowledge is shared has been amazing.
How is Vector different from other jobs you have had?
I actually feel cared about here. My manager and coworkers care about me as a person and not just an employee, which makes me feel supported through the highs and lows. Also, the flexibility of being able to create my own schedule and set a plan for myself is huge. You aren't having goals pushed on you; you set your own goals and managers help you succeed.
What professional skills have you developed?
Public speaking was my biggest fear. At SC2, I was lucky to be on a panel. Being up there in front of such a huge room of people was daunting—I remember my heart sank as soon as I looked at the crowd—but being able to tell my story and help other people out was awesome and is helping me get over that fear.
What are your favorite parts of the job?
I'd say 100% the income opportunity is number one because I'm very money motivated. As well as the flexibility. I do bodybuilding in my spare time and I'm very busy, so having a job that I work into my schedule rather than working my schedule around a job has been amazing.
