The interview

What led you to try 40 Years of Zen?

Five years ago, I'd taken a break from work and realized I had no idea what I wanted to do as the next step in my career. What made me say yes was hearing how transformative it had been for other people.

What were the immediate results of the program for your career?

I got really, really clear not only about what I wanted but what was really important to me. That let me target and find an amazing job, working for an amazing leader, and gave me a much better sense of what I wanted out of that job and where I want to go with my career.

How did the program change your internal mental state?

Before attending, I was extremely in my head; I spent so much time letting the RAM of a computer run and not actually doing anything. Zen has enabled me to really step back and be present and make decisions without all of that unnecessary work that's not going anywhere.

What did you appreciate most about the experience?

I appreciated the people most. They really made me feel safe and accepted and supported in a way that let me explore patterns and feelings I never thought I would have been comfortable going into. It's a testimony to the facilitators that they make you comfortable being uncomfortable.

How has your relationship with yourself shifted?

The thing that's shifted the most is the way that I treat myself. Zen has given me a little bit of space to help create a distance between the negative voices that are trying to keep me safe by preemptively saying 'that won't work.' I don't fall into the trap of saying 'my brain said it so it must be true.'

What is your biggest takeaway from this session?

My biggest takeaway from this round of Zen is that wanting connection and creating connection isn't a sign that there's something wrong with me; that is just part of being human and it's a beautiful part of being human.

Why would you recommend this program to others?

Because of how much you can accomplish in five days. There really is no way to quantify it; it is like taking a Sisyphean boulder off your back. It gives you the opportunity to dive into the deepest beliefs in your head and heart that are riding your life in ways you don't realize.

Frequently asked

Is the price of 40 Years of Zen worth the investment?

Jane Ortiz admitted she had hesitations because of the price tag, which she noted is not the cheapest option available. However, she concluded it was a great investment in herself because the level of transformative change she achieved was something she previously didn't think was possible.

What is the environment like at 40 Years of Zen?

Jane felt safe, accepted, and supported by the staff and facilitators. She noted that they make participants 'comfortable being uncomfortable,' allowing her to explore emotional patterns she previously would not have been comfortable discussing.

How does 40 Years of Zen help with overthinking?

Jane described her mind before the program as a computer letting its RAM run without doing anything. The program enabled her to step back, be present, and make decisions without the 'unnecessary work' of being stuck in her head.

Full transcript

Hi, my name is Jane. I'm shooting this video because five years ago, I'd taken a break from work and taken some time off and realized I had no idea what I wanted to do as the next step in my career. After 40 Years of Zen, I got really, really clear not only about what I wanted but what was really important to me and that let me target and find an amazing job, working for an amazing leader and give me a much better sense of not only what I wanted out of that job but has continued to serve me in understanding where I want to go with my career and what I value on what to do with my time. I highly recommend 40 Years of Zen, because it's an investment in yourself and it's an investment in all the little things you do every day to make life harder for yourself that you're not aware of. Before attending 40 Years of Zen, I was extremely in my head, I spent so much time it's almost like letting the ram of a computer run and not actually doing anything and Zen has enabled me to really step back and be present and make decisions without all of that unnecessary work that's not going anywhere. What made me say yes to 40 Years of Zen was hearing how transformative it had been for people. I definitely had a hesitation because of the price tag which quite frankly I never would have put a price tag on because I didn't think that kind of transformative change was possible but it's definitely been a great investment in myself. What I appreciated most about 40 Years of Zen was the people. They really made me feel safe and accepted and supported in a way that let me explore, I think some patterns and some feelings and some things that I never ever thought I would have been comfortable going into, I joke that if you told me before I came to Zen but the first time that I had to talk about my feelings I never would come and that's very true and I think it's a testimony to how great the facilitators and everyone here is that they make you comfortable being uncomfortable. So moving forward, I'm most excited about the sense of ease that I know I'll be taking back into the world and into my life and not only the realizations I've had this week but the additional discoveries I'll make about the shifts that I made this week as I go through the next weeks and months of my life. Having gone through this program the thing that's shifted the most for me is the way that I treat myself, that Zen has given me a little bit of space to help create a distance between the negative voices that are trying to keep me safe by preemptively saying that won't work so I don't get disciplined or whatever else helped me create a little more distance from them so that I don't fall into the trap of saying oh, well my brain said it so it must be true. Every time I come back to Zen, it impacts my life a little bit differently but the one thing that it always has in common is it makes things so easier and it always makes me really tempted to go wow, I wish I'd done that sooner. So I'm really excited to go and just feel how much easier it is to do things without the patterns that I got rid of this time. My biggest takeaway from this round of Zen is that wanting connection and creating connection isn't a sign that there's something wrong with me that is just part of being human and it's a beautiful part of being human. The main reason I would recommend 40 Years of Zen is because of how much you can accomplish in five days and there really is I think no way to quantify and you almost have to see it in someone you love or someone you know well to see how much of a like a Sisyphean boulder they're taking off at their back because there are plenty of other things you can do with plenty of price points and this one is not the cheapest but it really can give you a time and opportunity to dive into the deepest beliefs in your head and in your heart that are riding your life in ways you don't realize.
