Michael Biondo, a retired GM designer, credits Panic Proof Retirement for securing his financial future. After managing his own 401k for years, Biondo transitioned his holdings to Dan Casey starting in 2012. The result was a successful 2022 retirement, shifting from checking market numbers daily to once every few months with guaranteed principal protection.

The interview
How has your experience been since working with Panic Proof Retirement?
Since working with Panic Proof Retirement, I don't worry about it anymore. I feel confident and comfortable that he could grow my nest egg and protect the principal. That was my main thing. And really, he's done quite well since I've been retired, and I expect it to continue. I'm not worried about my holdings.
What was your professional background and how did you manage money previously?
I'm currently retired. I was a computer graphics designer for General Motors for thirty-seven years. For years, I was playing the market with my retirement fund at work, trying to buy low and sell high or whatever. I got to a point where I knew I was ten to fifteen years out from retiring.
When did you first start working with Dan Casey?
Back in twenty twelve, I contacted Dan, and we talked, and I decided to test run him, and I gave him about half of my holdings to play with. And little by little, I moved more and more to him, which made me worry less about day-to-day market activity as far as not checking numbers every day. I was checking numbers every day prior to that.
How often do you monitor your investments now?
At this point, I check the market maybe once a month, every other month. I don't really worry about it, and I've been very happy with what he's been doing for me. If I need an adjustment in what I'm getting out of my pension retirement fund, I make the call to the office and say, 'Hey, I need an extra five grand this month,' and I can get that money. Anyway, for me, it's hands-off, and I like it.
How did the firm help you decide when to retire?
I wanted a professional to be able to tell me if I can afford to retire or not. Twenty twelve, I couldn't. Twenty twenty-two, however, I made that call. Dan and I talked. He asked me what I needed, how much I needed on a monthly basis, and we talked some numbers, and we both determined that I, yes indeed, could afford to retire at this point.
Why did you choose Panic Proof over a large company like Fidelity?
Prior to Panic Proof, I think my only experience was General Motors 401ks and pensions. Company-run things are all managed by Fidelity. I talked to Fidelity on the phone, and then I talked to Dan, and I was the most comfortable working with Dan. He was able to explain things in layman's terms to me. You never deal with the same person twice when you're calling Fidelity. I like Panic Proof because I'm dealing with Dan.
What was your biggest fear regarding your retirement savings?
My biggest fear is losing the nest egg, obviously. The question he asked is, 'How risky do I wanna be?' And I said, 'Well, I want something that's gonna grow because I wanna retire. I don't mind being somewhat aggressive, but I just— I don't wanna lose it all.' And so he was able to convince me that he could manage it.
Frequently asked
Can I trust a private advisor more than a large firm like Fidelity?
Michael Biondo found that large firms like Fidelity often resulted in speaking to different people every time. He preferred Panic Proof Retirement because of the personal approach and the ability to work directly with Dan Casey and his dedicated team.
Will I lose control of my money if I use a financial advisor?
Michael noted that while the management is 'hands-off' for him, he retains full access. He mentioned that if he needs an extra five thousand dollars in a given month, he simply calls the office and receives the funds quickly.
How do I know if I can actually afford to retire?
Michael worked with Dan Casey for ten years prior to his retirement date. In 2022, they reviewed his monthly needs and expenses together, and Dan was able to confirm he was financially ready to make the call to retire.
