The interview
What health improvements have you seen in Gabriel?
Gabriel's health has improved. He's not been sick at all. His appetite has improved. His ability or willingness to eat variations of food is much improved. He's willing to eat vegetables, and that's kind of huge. His mood has changed. He's more even-keeled now.
What challenges was Gabriel facing before starting with Atypically Awesome?
Gabriel had many health issues. His immune system was really not working very well. He was getting sick about every two weeks. He has had a lot of problems with focus in school, a lot of ADHD symptoms, and his diet was pretty bad. He would kind of forget to eat and just eat poorly when he did.
How did these health issues affect his daily life and schooling?
Getting him to school every day was a really big battle, and then getting him to where he could stay in school. We had a lot of issues at school because he would get sick every two weeks, and he just couldn't maintain his attendance.
What makes Dr. Yana Kleyman's expertise unique?
She knows all the ins and outs of all these various supplements and how they work in your body and all the things that the body needs in order to function well. She understands the ADHD brain really well. She has her background in pharmaceuticals that I think is really helpful just to know that side as well, because Gabriel had to be on medication.
Did you have any hesitations about starting the program?
Cost was a hurdle. It's not inexpensive. But talking with her just made me feel better. She's definitely dealt with a lot of similar cases, and she just gave me the feeling of confidence that she knew how to approach these things.
What is the experience of working with her like day-to-day?
She takes it one little step at a time, so it's very easy to follow. She's very good at bringing your observation to the positive things that are happening. Being in the trenches day to day, I may not have noticed those things, but she's really good at helping you remember and recognize week to week what the changes have been.
Can you share a specific example of his improved immunity?
He was even in the presence of a friend of his that was staying at our house, and he did not get sick. The kid was coughing and sneezing and all over the place, but Gabriel did not pick that up.
How has your relationship with your son changed?
He and I are working better together. It was always kind of a battle of the wills before, and now it seems like he's more willing to hear me out and get on the same page as me and try different things.
