“We can help guide the employer on ways to reduce their costs in ways that they didn't think of before.”
“I see these plans paying for people with major health conditions. Claims in upwards of millions of dollars a year, with the employee or member having very little outlay.”
“What differentiates brokers is their knowledge of the carriers and the products and what are we doing with that compensation? How are we investing that back into the client?”
The interview
How does CorpStrat help clients manage increasing insurance costs?
We help by making sure that we're uncovering any new products or plan designs that may not have been explored previously. There might be a smaller network that has access to really good doctors at a lower price point that was never brought to their attention. We guide the employer on ways to reduce their costs in ways they didn't think of before.
What is a common misconception about how health benefits should work?
There's this misconception that it should pay for everything. If we think of homeowners' and auto insurance, we pay our premiums and we don't want an accident, but we do have a cost share. That is just what insurance is: we pay a portion, and the carrier pays a portion.
How do you view the negative press surrounding insurance carriers?
While some of it is accurate, as someone in the industry for 35 plus years, I see the other side. I see these plans paying for people with major health conditions and claims upwards of millions of dollars a year with the employee having very little outlay. I see the side where it does work.
What mistakes do employers often make with their benefit plans?
Mistakes are probably due to a lack of understanding and knowledge. In California small groups, there are no negotiations; everything is set by the Affordable Care Act. Employers should also know they can shop their plans outside of the busy December or January cycles to get better attention from carriers.
What differentiates CorpStrat from other benefits brokers?
Benefits brokers all receive the same rates from carriers. What differentiates us is our knowledge of the carriers and products, and what we are doing with our compensation. We invest that back into the client with service and value-added services. We are a small but mighty team that is local yet national.
What kind of ongoing support does CorpStrat provide?
We answer our phones and emails not only for your renewal and marketing strategy, but all year round. We help you and your employees navigate these challenging times and benefit plans that can be so complex.
Frequently asked
Do different benefits brokers have access to better insurance rates?
According to Sarena Warner, benefits brokers all receive the same rates from carriers for both small and large groups. She explains that the real differentiator is the broker's knowledge and how they invest their compensation back into client services.
When is the best time for a large employer to shop for new insurance plans?
Sarena Warner suggests shopping for plans with April, May, or June effective dates. She notes that carriers are often overwhelmed in Q4 and Q1, so moving to a spring cycle allows for a smoother implementation process.
Can small businesses in California negotiate their health insurance rates?
Sarena Warner clarifies that for small groups in California, there are no negotiations because rates and plan designs are set in stone by the Affordable Care Act.
