The interview

What is your name and business?

Hi, I'm Laurie Cartman and I'm coming to you from the beautiful Montreal, Quebec. I am an H7 member and the name of my business is called The Copy Lab.

What brought you to H7 Network initially?

I'd heard other people mention it here and there. So I went to the website, I had a phone call with Clay. He invited me to a couple of meetings, which I attended, and I was really very impressed with the culture overall looking for a way to expand my business. I'm Canadian, but all my business is in the US and H7 is an international group, so that was a great interest to me.

What made you decide to become a formal member?

Attending the meetings and meeting the people and realizing that this really is a community of people who really want to help each other. There was this community that I'd not felt in any other of the networking groups and I'm like always in five, six groups at a time. I just didn't feel that camaraderie and I didn't feel the same interest that people have in really helping other people.

How do conversations in H7 lead to actual business results?

When you're speaking to an H7 member, they're very open about their network. So you're not just speaking to them, you're speaking to who they know. That's how the referrals start; you speak to an H7 member, who refers you to someone who is not a member, who refers you to someone else, and then you get a contract. You can actually trace the percentage of your business that comes from H7 back to the genesis being someone in the group.

How does the Connect, Serve, and Ask (CSA) method change how you network?

The connect, serve, and ask method literally transforms how you used to drone on just like everybody else with a 30-second pitch. I just don't do that anymore. In H7, one of the things you learn is just get to the point and ask for what you want. It is a great way of building relationships where you're not just looking at someone as a dollar sign.

What are the educational benefits of the membership?

The training that they give you, the CSA training and other trainings, are very helpful. They run 50 different meetings a week and a good part of those are educational. I really like the educational aspect because I'm learning tools and tricks that I use in my business. I find it very polyvalent in terms of the membership.

Why would you recommend H7 to other professionals?

I would recommend H7 to business professionals and entrepreneurs because it is a way to grow your business internationally. It's a fabulous group of people. What's most important is that there's 1,400 members—I think it's the fifth largest networking group in the US. The connections you make all over the world enable you to generate business that on your own you would never have been able to generate.

Frequently asked

How does H7 Network differ from traditional networking groups?

Lori Karpman notes that unlike traditional groups, H7 is strictly B2B and composed of decision-makers. She highlights a genuine culture of camaraderie and support, mentioning that members reached out personally during her hospitalization, a level of care she hadn't experienced in other groups.

Is H7 Network just another group for pitching services?

No, according to Lori, there is no pitching in H7. The focus is on developing relationships that lead to referral sources, collaborators, or strategic partners rather than measuring transactions or meeting attendance.

Can H7 Network help with international business growth?

Yes, Lori Karpman specifically joined because she is based in Canada but does all her business in the US. She describes H7 as an international group that enables connections and business generation all over the world.
