The interview

Who are you and why did you decide to get portraits taken?

Hi, my name is Emily Nestor. I work at the YMCA full-time as an Aquatics Director, but I also work part-time teaching dance. And I got my portraits taken to build confidence and start building up my professional portfolio.

How did you find the studio and what drew you to their work?

I found her first on Instagram and looking at all the portraits, they were all just elegant. Like every time I looked at a picture, I just felt that they were graceful, peaceful, elegant, and I just really wanted to be a part of that.

What was your mindset going into the session?

I think I'm at the age where I just want to start to figure out what I'm doing with my life career wise and it felt like the perfect stepping stone to know that I can do it and give me that confidence boost. So it was at the time where I needed a little bit of confidence.

What was your reaction when you first saw the finished portraits?

I was really nervous to see it because this was the first experience for me to have them in this professional manner. So when I saw them, I was so overcome with like, I was just in awe of everything. I was truly speechless. I was in awe and I like, I felt beautiful on the inside.

Did your perspective on the photos change after seeing them?

At first I was like dead set of it's a portfolio builder and how they're going to come out is just perfect for what I need. And then I saw them and I was like, I need to have a physical copy of this. I never want these to go away. I want these to be around forever because that's who I am in this moment. And I want to remember that.

How did your friends and family react to the images?

I showed my best friend Carly and she just had her jaw dropped and she was like, 'that's not you, there's no way.' She thought they were like, 'these are going in a magazine, these are so good.' And my mom was just so excited because the last time she had pictures of me really done, that was for my senior year high school. So seeing that back, she was just proud to see how far I've come as a person.

What was the environment like during the shoot with the photographer?

My photographer was actually so calm, cool, collected the whole time and she really create an environment where I felt comfortable to take that creative freedom. Delaney really let me put my input into it and really let me express myself. I never felt that anything I did was wrong. If anything was maybe not looking the best on camera, we just did it again.

And like we always had that option to just keep going. So I never felt wrong or out of place.
