The interview

Can you share a favorite customer story?

One of my favorite customer stories is that this guy bought a homemaker set from me, and then he got his set, and after about a week he gave that set to his mom and then bought a signature set and a flatware chest from me. He knew nothing about Cutco, and then after that he spent thousands of dollars on Cutco because of how great it was.

What was your background before joining Vector Marketing?

I'm from Northville, Michigan. Before working for Vector, I worked at Cold Stone, an ice cream shop, and I was a hostess at a restaurant for about a week. I started working for Vector right after I graduated high school; I needed a job, and my dad works with the company and knew how good the training was.

How did you handle negative perceptions of the job?

For the first summer, I did experience some negativity, especially on social media, especially TikTok nowadays, and some friends like laugh at how it's like a knife job, but I made good money, and I learned a lot through the process, so I knew it was worth it, and I just kind of blocked out anything that was negative.

What surprised you most about the company culture?

What surprised me the most about Vector was probably how optimistic everyone is in the job. Everyone wants the best for you, and everyone wants you to keep growing and be the best version of yourself. You get pushed to the best of your ability every single day that you go into work.

What are the benefits of the flexible work structure?

The best part about working for myself instead of a company is it's super flexible. I get to plan my own schedule. Especially the first year that I started was right after I graduated high school, so I had grad parties and graduation itself. I got to pick whenever I wanted to work, and I got to pick how hard I wanted to work. There was nobody really telling me what to do.

How has the role changed you personally?

I've been with the company for three summers now, so I became very self-motivated and I've learned a lot of skills that a lot of people in my same age range don't have. One thing that I couldn't do before Vector that I can do now is public speaking. I've talked at a conference of over 300 people, so I've gained a lot of confidence through the job.

Why have you stayed with Vector Marketing and why would you recommend it?

I've stayed because of the people; it is such an uplifting environment. I love going into work; I don't dread it. I would recommend this job to anyone because of all the skills that you will learn, especially in a short period of time. The pay is very good, but also because you'll grow so much as a person.
