Marc Nash* transformed his kitchen with House of Worktops by installing a 3.8-meter marble-effect compact laminate surface. By choosing this material over stone or quartz, he saved approximately £1,000 in preforming costs. House of Worktops was the only supplier able to provide a continuous 4-meter length, allowing for a seamless installation without joins.

At a glance

Primary Use Case
Renovating an existing kitchen with a 3.8m seamless worktop
Reported Result
Saved £1,000 compared to stone/quartz fabrication
Time to Value
Installed in a single day following early morning delivery
They were the only people I could find that were able to supply four meter lengths. So that was a very big plus for us because it meant that we could have a continuous worktop with no joins.
I felt confident that I would be able to do that without needing to get it preformed, which I would need for a stone or a quartz that added about a thousand pounds to the price.
I was very impressed that the guys that brought the worktops down left the factory at three o'clock in the morning to get here by 10 o'clock, which meant that we had the whole day to install it.

The interview

Can you introduce yourself and the project you were working on?

My name's Mark Nash. I live in Plymouth, Devon, South West England. We were changing an existing worktop in our kitchen. We bought this house in June and we're renovating it. So we added to the kitchen units and in the process needed to change the worktop.

Why did you choose House of Worktops and this specific material?

We had a number of options that were available to us and went through those options considering each one on its merits and ended up for a combination of reasons with the House of Worktops compact laminate that we've installed.

What were the financial benefits of choosing compact laminate over stone?

Because it was an existing kitchen, I was able to confidently produce the dimensions needed to cut it to size because we needed some insets cut for the sink and the hob. I felt confident that I would be able to do that without needing to get it preformed, which I would need for a stone or a quartz that added about a thousand pounds to the price. So it was an economical option for us.

Did you have any concerns about the product before or after installation?

My greatest concern, I suppose, is the ability of the worktop to be able to withstand stains as it does appear that I have to wipe it quite quickly if we spill anything on it. So red wine, for example, if left on the worktop, I think might be a problem. So we're quite vigilant in making sure that we mop up anything that we spill quite quickly.

What was the main reason you chose this specific supplier for such a long length?

They were able to supply a worktop which was in excess of three and half meters. We needed a piece if we weren't going to have a join that was 3.8 meters long and they were the only people I could find that were able to supply four meter lengths. So that was a very big plus for us because it meant that we could have a continuous worktop with no joins.

How do you feel about the final aesthetic of the kitchen?

It feels great, it's transformed it. We had a kind of wood effect worktop before and now we've got a very light marble effect and we're very happy with it. Everybody's been really impressed by it; we've got a friend who's an interior designer who said it looked beautiful.

How was the delivery and installation process?

I think the whole process was very simple. From the initial inquiry to the time it took to deliver was very quick. And I was very impressed that the guys that brought the worktops down left the factory at three o'clock in the morning to get here by 10 o'clock, which meant that we had the whole day to install it, which was a great advantage because I had a couple of guys lined up to help me and we managed to do it in a day.

Frequently asked

Are compact laminate worktops stain resistant?

Marc Nash* expressed concern regarding the worktop's ability to withstand stains from liquids like red wine. He noted that he remains vigilant and mops up spills quickly to prevent potential marking on the light marble-effect surface.
