The interview
How did you get started with Vector Marketing and Cutco?
I started selling Cutco when I was studying electrical engineering at UC Santa Barbara. I was a typical introverted guy, and my mom, who is a realtor, suggested I get some 'people experience.' I stumbled across the job figuring it would just be a summer gig.
What were your earnings like as a student?
I was doing really well, making between $50,000 to $100,000 a year while being a full-time college student. I never made a conscious decision to sell knives for my career, but I've been with Cutco now for 27 years.
What does your current sales career look like today?
My career sales are at about $4.8 million. Currently, I sell to the federal program on military bases, do traditional home shows like the LA County Fair, and handle GSA contract orders for things like a thousand pocket knives. This allows me to sell between $300,000 to $450,000 per year working very few days.
What skills did you develop through the Vector experience?
I learned pretty much most of the communication skills that I have, becoming really comfortable talking to people anytime, anywhere. It also taught me that I could work really hard when I wanted to, which gives me the freedom to play hard, like surfing, kite boarding, and mountain biking.
How has the flexibility of the job impacted your family life?
My wife and I were always able to be present for our two children; we never had to put them in daycare. This job gave me the flexibility to work when I wanted. For example, when I remodeled my house, I unplugged for six months to do the work myself.
What was your experience like when you first started as an introvert?
I was an unconfident guy that looked at the ground nonstop. My first presentations were essentially me holding up a binder with my script behind it and looking down. I was told if I followed the manual and the program, I would be successful because the product is phenomenal.
How has the business changed since you first joined?
It's a very different business now. When I started, it was the first year someone sold $100,000 in a year. Now, I'm coaching a kid who sold $25,000 in a single week. The growth of what you can accomplish has gone parabolic.
