The interview

What has 40 Years of Zen brought to your life?

I think what 40 Years of Zen has brought to my life is a reminder of my own power and the power of my own perspective, unclouded by expectation or the need to please people or any of the extra stuff that pulls at our vanity and our pride. I'm excited to just sort of be a cleaner, clearer channel and conduit for creativity.

How do you feel about returning to your daily life in Los Angeles?

I'm excited to get back to my life and get back to my space and, kind of, edit it a little bit—remove some of the clutter from my space, get back to work. I'm excited to get back to work because I feel like I have, kinda, new tools.

What were your expectations coming into the program?

I didn't have a clue what to expect coming into 40 Years of Zen. I was a little bit skeptical. I do meditate a little bit. I do, you know, meditate on gratitude and some of the tools that we use, but not with the rigor and intensity and time that we did here.

How did the meditation sessions compare to your previous experience?

The meditation sessions were longer than I've ever done in my life and really brought me to kind of a higher energetic plane. This was a week where at the end of every day I was really, really tired. Like, too tired to do some of the stuff that I should have been doing, which is fine.

What was the social experience like during the week?

It is a way to share in a very deep way with people you do not know at all. And, in so doing, you really become much closer to them. I feel very close to these people who I did not know on Monday, and it's a really unique, and unexpected, and powerful experience.
