Karen Lind, an 84-year-old participant at 40 Years of Zen, reported a profound shift in her mental state, overcoming depression that began at age 80. The interview
Could you introduce yourself and tell us where you are from?
I'm Karen Lin, and I'm from Vero Beach, Florida, and I am 84 years old.
What brought you to 40 Years of Zen?
My grandchildren have been here four times, and they suggested that I might like to join them. My granddaughter-in-law, Rebecca, said, 'Grandma, maybe I could get something so that you'd feel a little better' because I started to get depressed at around 80 years old.
How would you describe the results you've experienced here?
I would say this is worth whatever all of the drugs in the whole world when you have it in yourself, you just, oh, you're bubbling. I feel like I'm in a rainbow with fireworks all over. It's just so beautiful.
How has your sense of self changed after the program?
I feel so important. I have that feeling back. You know, I had a wonderful experience.
What was your mindset regarding the commitment required for the program?
I think a lazy person, you have to want to do it. But I just knew that there's something better for me, and if there wasn't, what did I have to lose? A few hours that I would have probably stayed in bed and watched the stock market and all of the horrors that are going on in the world.
What is your hope for others following this experience?
I like to see everybody happy and prosperous. Everybody, you all need to join together as a team.
Frequently asked
Is 40 Years of Zen worth the time and effort for an older adult?
Karen Lind noted that while a person has to 'want to do it' and not be lazy, she felt she had nothing to lose compared to staying in bed watching negative news. She ultimately found the experience to be worth more than 'all of the drugs in the whole world' for the internal joy it produced.
Can 40 Years of Zen help with depression in your 80s?
Yes, Karen Lind specifically sought out the program because she started to get depressed around age 80. After participating, she reported feeling 'important' again and described her internal state as 'bubbling' with beauty.
What is the experience of 40 Years of Zen like for a participant?
Karen Lind described the outcome as a beautiful, internal feeling like being in a 'rainbow with fireworks.' She emphasized that the program requires a desire to improve rather than a lazy approach to one's mental state.
