Oleg Ivanov experienced a profound emotional shift at 40 Years of Zen by setting four specific intentions: becoming forgiving, empathetic, balanced, and free of fears. Through a week of intensive work and peer resets, he moved past ego-driven resistance to identify internal work needed for personal growth and openness with strangers.

Usually in the discomfort is where the magic happens, not in the comfort setting.
I realized I haven't done any resets on myself because it's I think it's toughest to critique, is yourself.
The biggest takeaway is there's still work that needs to be done within myself and as much as my ego doesn't want it to be happening, I want it to happen.

The interview

What was the most surprising part of the experience for you?

My openness in front of strangers very much surprised me. I think was the hardest thing to do and I'm pretty sure that's why it's not advertised in the scope work that is going to be happening.

How did you handle the discomfort of the program?

I had a feeling and I said, 'listen, let's go, whatever it is, it is' and usually in the discomfort is where the magic happens, not in the comfort setting. That was definitely pretty uncomfortable but so were the others. They were in the same position as I was and they did a great job, telling some stories more gut-wrenching than mine.

What specific goals did you set for your week at 40 Years of Zen?

We set four intentions for this week that I should take away with me. They were, I am forgiving, I am empathetic, I am free of my fears and I am balanced. Those were the intentions that were set by myself and then through the week we were working on things that were associated with those intentions.

What did you learn about yourself during the reset process?

I started this week by doing all of the resets on other people and only on the last day I realized I haven't done any resets on myself because it's I think it's toughest to critique, is yourself. It's easy to look at others and blame others for things that happened in my life.

What is your biggest takeaway from the program?

The biggest takeaway is there's still work that needs to be done within myself and as much as my ego doesn't want it to be happening, I want it to happen.
