The interview

Can you introduce yourself and describe the issue you were facing?

My name is Hubert Garvey. I live in Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland. I am a retired engineer. I was out mowing the lawn one day and noticed some cracks in the plaster on a corner of my house. So I had a surveyor come in just to find out what was happening, and he said there was subsidence in that corner and we would have to get the building underpinned in that particular spot.

What methods did you consider for repairing the subsidence?

There's two methods were described to me. One is the old-fashioned method where you dig it all out, you take the diggers in, and you underpin it with concrete. Or it was suggested GeoBear were a company that can do it with very minimal invasiveness of the grounds or the area.

What was your initial experience contacting Geobear?

I contacted GeoBear and one of their agents came up to survey the house for me. Enda arrived, he surveyed the house. We come in, we sat down. He spent about thirty minutes with me explaining what GeoBear do, how the resin works, and how long it would take. After that, I got a quote from GeoBear within about ten days or so, and we agreed a date.

How did the Geobear solution compare to traditional methods in terms of quality and cost?

Enda explained the process, that it's actually much better. Not only is it less invasive, but it's actually a better solution to digging out and underpinning with concrete. The quotation itself, I wouldn't have exact numbers, but it probably cost in the region of one third of what a traditional method would have cost.

What was the day of the repair like?

On that day, he had a crew here at eight o'clock in the morning, and I have to say the whole thing went very seamlessly. And by four-thirty that day, the job was completed and the boys were gone home. The guys were just total gentlemen. It was very, very well done.

Was there any specific preparation required on your part?

Yes, there was prep work to be done. You had to expose the foundations for two reasons. One is the guys could get to that, but the main reason was to be that you wouldn't puncture any water lines or utility lines coming into the house. The only other thing I would add is you have to leave an area clear for their trucks to be able to get in close to the site.

Frequently asked

Is Geobear more expensive than traditional concrete underpinning?

According to Hubert Garvey, the Geobear solution was significantly more affordable, costing in the region of one-third of what a traditional method would have cost. He found it to be a better solution that was also less invasive to his property.

How long does the Geobear foundation repair process take?

The on-site work is extremely efficient; Hubert Garvey reported that the crew arrived at 8:00 AM and the entire job was completed with the team headed home by 4:30 PM the same day.

What preparation is needed for Geobear geopolymer injection?

Hubert Garvey noted that foundations had to be exposed beforehand to ensure the crew could access the area and, crucially, to avoid puncturing any water or utility lines during the injection process.
