The interview
How long have you been using AAT and what has been the impact on your practice?
I started using AAT in my practice about ten years ago. Since then my practice has only grown and grown and I heartily recommend it both because it's effective and will change people's lives but also because it's really useful as a business tool.
What was your experience treating allergies before implementing the AAT Expert System?
Allergies were always one of those things that I felt like could be better. In my clinical life it was one of those things so many people suffering from so many symptoms related to allergies or sensitivities. It was really hard sometimes to say I don't know that I can do a whole lot to help you with that, I can maybe relieve things a little bit but that's just a problem you're going to have for forever.
What other methods did you try for allergy symptoms that were unsuccessful?
I'd create custom herbal formulas and those were both time consuming, cumbersome, expensive and with mixed results. Sometimes people would quit taking the herbs or they wouldn't get significantly better from acupuncture alone.
How do you integrate AAT with your neurological focus in acupuncture?
I treat a lot of ADD and ADHD and being able to have them treated with AAT for symptoms associated with things like food coloring, sugar, and gluten really helps reset the baseline. When we're working with acupuncture their brain is much calmer, they have less severe reactions and they have an easier time working with the treatment.
How does the needle-free aspect of AAT benefit your patient relationships?
I've totally had people come into the office that are terrified of needles. Because it's pain free, needle free, no injury, no worries, no suffering, they are willing to try it. Once they feel better, they are much more receptive and might eventually try a couple needles to see if they can feel better that way, too.
What was the learning curve like for the AAT therapy?
AAT therapy has been fairly easy to learn. I left a little bit of margin on my time for probably the first month or two when I was first getting into it and practicing the technique and getting really good at the muscle isolation testing portion, but as time went on I've gotten faster and faster.
Frequently asked
Can Advanced Allergy Therapeutics be used for patients who are afraid of needles?
Yes. Dr. Shawn Weeks highlights that because AAT is painless and needle-free, it serves as a 'gentler segue' for patients terrified of needles, allowing them to build trust before potentially trying acupuncture.
Is the Advanced Allergy Therapeutics system difficult for practitioners to learn?
Dr. Weeks found the therapy to be straightforward, easy to understand, and intuitive. While he left extra time in his schedule for the first month or two to master muscle isolation testing, he became faster and more efficient shortly after training.
How does AAT compare to herbal formulas for allergy symptoms?
Dr. Weeks noted that custom herbal formulas were often time-consuming, cumbersome, expensive, and produced mixed results. AAT provided a more reliable way to treat symptoms, especially for patients unwilling to take herbs.
