The interview

What is the core mission and offering of Geobear?

We aim to be the world's leading sustainable geotechnical asset management business and obviously the core offering is the non disruptive crown engineering methods.

What is your personal history with the company?

I'm Chief Executive and main shareholder of Geobear. Geobear started a long time ago; we used to be called Uretek. I first started working for Uretek in year 2000 when I was 12 years old and I've been Chief Executive since 2013.

How did the technology and the business originate?

The original invention was done in Finland in the early 80's by a gentleman called Beiko Häkkinen, who came up with a concept of lifting sunken concrete slabs with expansive polymer. My father Timo Lahtinen joined in '87 and grew the business outside of Finland by licensing these patents to some 38 countries.

What is the culture like for professionals joining from large corporations?

They see a dynamic team in which you can directly focus your efforts. You're much closer to the call phase regardless of what position it is because it's still a relatively small organization and we are quite agile and nimble when compared to larger industry partners.

How does Geobear support career development for new graduates?

People who join us from school or with less experience see a long term career path. We are very proud that we have long collaborations with many people who joined us as a first or second job and they've been here for 10 plus years and developed into leadership positions.

We aim to be the world's leading sustainable geotechnical asset management business and obviously the core offering is the non disruptive crown engineering methods. Hello, my name is Otso Lahtinen. and I'm Chief Executive and main shareholder of Geobear. Geobear started a long time ago. We used to be called Uretek, so I first started working for Uretek in year 2000 when I was 12 years old and I've been Chief Executive since 2013. As you know we provide sustainable geotechnical asset management solutions to solve various types of ground problems and the original invention was done in Finland in the early 80's by a gentleman called Beiko Häkkinen, who came up with a concept of lifting sunken concrete slabs with expansive polymer and he patented it in many, many countries and established a contracting business over there in Finland and my father Timo Lahtinen joined in '87 and wrote the business outside of Finland by licensing these patents. So, that was the original path of growth to some 38 countries. We've got people who come from established large corporations that have done a long often very successful career and have lots of skills and know what good looks like in terms of process and established business may feel like it's getting very repetitive and there's maybe lack of creativity and a big, big engine that you are in a small part often just the feedback that we get and when they join Geobear, they see a dynamic team in which you can directly focus your efforts. You're much closer to the call phase if you will regardless of what position it is because it's still a relatively small organization and we are quite agile and nimble when compared to larger industry partners. The other type of category is people who join us from school or with less experience perhaps and they see a long term career path we are very proud that we long collaborations with many people who joined us first or second job and they've been here for 10 plus years and developed into leadership positions But we've got our values summarized in an acronym SPIRE. So, first one is Safety. In practice, I believe being safe psychologically and physically very important any group of people and especially with our type of business where we have real life risks such as hitting power cables or various other things that can happen. The second key value is Partnership. We aim to make a long term business relationship which means the agreement that we make the party needs to be extremely clear and well defined and both parties need to understand ideally their long term wants and needs and try to exceed them, how we define partnership. Third one is Integrity. completely unwavering commitment to doing what you said you would. So, we aim to have a world where our actions and words align as much as possible. I get that it's very hard, high bar to set but it is worth setting. It can be life transforming if those two can be achieved or if that can be, if that can be achieved. Then we are at Respect. Life's too short to work with toxic people. So we focus on people that share our vision and values and are genuinely loyal and committed to the company. And then Excellence, constant and never ending improvement. So we really look for growth, mindset which can be described as obviously desire and belief that an individual can grow and develop and can increase their skills by learning. So that your skills are not given or limited to your degree necessarily, but you can learn new skills, you can acquire new skills, you are humble to take feedback, you see feedback as an opportunity to learn. Those are our values.
