Barbara Richardson used Geobear to repair a half-inch structural crack beneath her bay window in South London. The non-intrusive geopolymer process was completed just two weeks after her initial video call. Richardson highlighted the speed of the external work, noting that the process was not at all intrusive to her home's interior.

At a glance

Primary Use Case
Repairing a half-inch structural crack under a bay window
Reported Result
Stabilized foundation with zero internal disruption
Time to Value
Work started 2 weeks after initial video call
I mean, by huge, I mean probably half an inch and it seemed to have come overnight.
I wouldn't have known it was going on had I not seen it with my own eyes, as it were.
I was amazed to see how light it was. It was like a piece of lava from a volcano, very, very light and very strong.

The interview

How quickly did Geobear respond to your inquiry?

They solved it very quickly as soon as I was in touch with them. I had a video call of their people, and two weeks later they were doing it. So it was very fast.

What was the experience like on the day of the repair?

It was quite exciting on the day because it involved a lot of men in hard hats and hi-ves in a little residential road so people were rather intrigued about what was going on. But the process itself didn't take very long, and it wasn't at all intrusive.

What specific structural issues were you facing?

In my sitting room, I have a bay window, and the wall beneath my bay window suddenly had a huge crack in it. I mean, by huge, I mean probably half an inch and it seemed to have come overnight. But it was in a place where I had some cracks and subsidence about 12 years ago.

How did you find out about Geobear?

I got a neighbor in who was a builder, and he gave me the name of a surveying company. A surveyor came, did a survey, and recommended that I get in touch with Geobear.

Why did you choose Geobear over traditional underpinning?

I hadn't really heard of GeoBear, and actually the way that they do things, I thought sounded a really good way because there are houses in my road that have been underpinned sort of 20 years ago. When I read about it, it was fascinating and so I just thought that's what I'll go ahead with.

What preparation was required for the site?

For the surveyor we'd had to dig a couple of pits in front of the bay window and also in another place where there were cracks on the exterior of house, to see if there were roots of any trees. Fortunately this time there were no roots. I had to remove some brickwork because my front garden has a design that has some brickwork in it, so some of the bricks had to be removed.

What was your impression of the geopolymer material?

Afterwards, one of the guys working there gave me a piece of the material that is formed when he pumps it all in. I was amazed to see how light it was. It was like a piece of lava from a volcano, very, very light and very strong.

Frequently asked

Is Geobear foundation repair intrusive to the inside of the house?

According to Barbara Richardson, the process was not at all intrusive and she wouldn't have known it was happening if she hadn't seen it. The work was entirely external, requiring only the temporary removal of some garden brickwork.

How long does it take to get Geobear to start work?

Barbara Richardson reported a very fast turnaround, stating that Geobear was on-site doing the work just two weeks after her initial video call.

What is the material Geobear uses for foundation repair?

Barbara Richardson described the material as being like a piece of lava from a volcano—very light but very strong—after being shown a sample by the technicians on-site.
