The interview

What is your professional background and where are you located?

My name's Nicole Seal Shepherdson. I'm located in Connecticut, and I am a nurse practitioner specializing in women's integrative health.

What were you looking for when you first discovered the Institute of Restorative Health?

I learned about it close to ten years ago when I was a new functional nutritional therapy practitioner. I was looking to dive deeper with my clients, offer functional lab testing, and be able to make a deeper impact on people's health to help them achieve more meaningful clinical results.

How has the IRH framework impacted your clinical practice and business?

The IRH framework allows me to be much more effective and comprehensive for my patients. It's built a reputation for me that's been really positive and allowed me to grow my business mostly by word of mouth.

Why do you prioritize gastrointestinal health in your practice?

Prioritizing gastrointestinal health with each patient has been a fantastic way to set a foundation for true healing. It allows me to zoom out and offer education in a way that wouldn't be possible in conventional settings, acknowledging the importance of foundational gut health as a differentiator for attracting new patients.

Can you provide an example of a patient success story using these protocols?

A patient with persistent allergic presentation symptoms—mast cell activation or histamine intolerance—had tried all the band-aid options. We ran a GI map which showed multiple pathogenic strains of bacteria and H. pylori. A month ago, she reported a near complete resolution of her allergic symptoms and feels empowered to manage her health.

What specific courses have you completed with the Institute of Restorative Health?

I completed level one, the gastrointestinal healing training course, and then made the decision to continue with the next two levels: hormone healing and blood chemistry. I'm also furthering my training with them this fall.

What sets the Institute of Restorative Health apart from other education providers?

It offers a level of clinical detail that many other training programs don't offer. The support offered to students is fairly unprecedented, including access to instructors and continuing education as graduates. It provides a deep sense of confidence in the quality of data presented.

Frequently asked

Is the time investment for IRH clinical training worth it for busy practitioners?

Nicole Ceil-Shepherdson notes that while the education is dense and detailed, every moment spent makes her a better provider. She emphasizes that for licensed providers pressed for time, this program offers a reliable space to build from clinically.

How does IRH compare to other integrative continuing education programs?

Nicole states that IRH offers a level of clinical detail and unprecedented student support, including direct access to instructors and graduate education, that many other training programs lack.

Can the IRH framework help patients who have failed other treatment modalities?

Yes, Nicole used the IRH foundation of gastrointestinal health to help a patient who had 'come up empty-handed' with both conventional and other integrative symptomatic relief strategies.

Full transcript

Institute of Restorative Health Education. It provides a philosophical clinical home for the integrative licensed practitioner. It's high quality information, a process with which you can approach each patient and know that you're going to be getting good clinical results for them. IRH framework just allows me to be much more effective and comprehensive for my patients, and it's built a reputation for me that's been really positive and allowed me to grow my business mostly by word of mouth. Hi, my name's Nicole Seal Shepherdson. I'm located in Connecticut, and I am a nurse practitioner. I specialize in women's integrative health. I learned about the Institute of Restorative Health close to ten years ago now when I was a new functional nutritional therapy practitioner, and that was my first experience getting advanced clinical training. At the time, I was looking to be able to dive deeper with my clients, patients, and offer functional lab testing and just be able to make a deeper impact on people's health and to help them achieve more meaningful clinical results. So as a nurse practitioner, I really value having the framework that the Institute of Restorative Health offers. Being able to prioritize, for instance, gastrointestinal health with each patient as they come into my office, has been a fantastic way to set a foundation for true healing with my patients. It also really lets me zoom out and offer education to patients in a way that wouldn't be possible in conventional settings. Just right up front, acknowledging the importance of foundational gut health in the person's overall health is something that people aren't experiencing in their other healthcare settings. And it's been a differentiator for me in terms of attracting new patients and being able to get really solid clinical results with people. It's also been a tool that I've been able to use to help people who have really come up empty-handed with a lot of other treatment modalities, either conventional or integrative. Being able to go back to that really essential foundation of gastrointestinal health and looking deeper and seeing what's been missed. So a prototypical patient who walks into my office is a woman in her mid-thirties to early forties who has seen a lot of other providers for sort of nebulous, vague symptoms. A perfect example is a recent patient of mine who was experiencing persistent allergic presentation symptoms. We probably would refer to them as like mast cell activation presentation or a histamine intolerance presentation. And she was sort of at her wit's end because she'd tried all the, like, symptomatic relief strategies and changed her diet and done all of the band-aid options. So I suggest that we run a GI map. Her GI map clearly came back with the presence of multiple different pathogenic strains of bacteria, H. pylori, and several strains of bacteria that are known to be histamine producers in the gut. And when I last saw her, which was probably a month ago, she reported a near complete resolution of her allergic symptoms, and she feels really empowered to continue managing her symptoms as they come up in the future. And always understanding that she has something to come back to in terms of lab test inquiry if things start to regress for her or if she needs, you know, additional support from me. So after completing level one, the gastrointestinal healing training course, it was immediately clear to me that the Institute of Restorative Health offers a level of clinical detail that many other training programs don't offer. The support that students are offered as they go through the program is fairly unprecedented. Access to instructors, access to continuing education as graduates. And I made the decision fairly early on to continue my education with the Institute of Restorative Health, taking the next two levels, hormone healing and blood chemistry. So I have every confidence in the quality of the information coming from the Institute of Restorative Health that I'm using to make clinical decisions for my patients. And going forward, I'm going to further my training with the Institute of Restorative Health this fall. Just because I have this deep sense of confidence in the quality of the information and the data presented, I can feel fully confident that it's putting me in a position to be the most effective, safest practitioner that I could be. As licensed providers, one of the things we are most pressed for is time, and we really need to know that if we're gonna be investing our energy and time into continuing education, that continuing education is going to actually offer us a space to build from clinically and allow us to be better practitioners. I have done a lot of integrative continuing education, and I can say with complete confidence that the Institute of Restorative Health does offer that. And although it is dense and detailed and clinically there's a lot of depth, you can rest assured that every moment you spend on this education is going to make you a better provider.
