Lisa Ference of Clifton Dental Arts credits Techspedient Networks with transforming her practice’s security posture. By implementing comprehensive monitoring, Techspedient identified numerous attempted breaches and prevented a software vendor from accidentally creating a security vulnerability. The partnership allows the dental team to focus on patient care while Techspedient manages all hardware planning and vendor coordination.

The interview

What is your experience with Techspedient's support and responsiveness?

One of the nice things about Techpediant is they are great with support. If you have an issue, a concern, they're quick to respond. They're very thorough. If there's ever anything that they can't take advantage of fixing immediately, they make sure you understand what the timeline is, so you're never sitting there and waiting and wondering.

What challenges were you facing with your previous IT support?

One of the challenges I found was that being a dentist, I don't know enough about IT to know where my shortcomings are, and the techs that I was working with in the past weren't really leading me down the path to total security. At that point, I realized that something was missing, and we needed to move on to bigger and better things.

How would you describe the onboarding and hardware planning process?

The onboarding was wonderful. It really was very simple. Anthony did a lot of the work himself, and so I knew I was in good hands. He actually did all the planning as far as which machines we were going to replace and what we were going to use. He also took a good look at my office space, so he was able to get machines that fit well into the space that I had.

What did you learn about your practice's security after switching to Techspedient?

What I found was that their monitoring was a lot more involved than I had realized was really necessary. Anthony actually was able to give me a report showing how many attempted breaches there were on my system, and everybody was shocked.

How does Techspedient handle issues involving third-party software vendors?

We have a lot of different pieces of software with different vendors, and there are times when things aren't playing nice together. Now I have Techpediant, and they take care of everything so that we don't have to. It frees us up to be doing the things we're supposed to be doing.

Can you share a specific example of how their expertise protected your practice?

Our practice management software was having an issue, and Anthony had actually gotten on the phone with the vendor. He realized that in the process of trying to fix the issue, the vendor was going in and ready to make some changes in my software, which would have opened up a vulnerability. He helped them actually to figure out what the right answer was so that they could fix the problem, and I could still be secure.

What advice would you give to other practice owners regarding IT and security?

I would definitely invest in the best cybersecurity IT you can find. There's just so much risk involved. We would think as dentists, we were small practices and that we wouldn't be a good target, and we're finding over and over again that that's really not the case. There aren't a lot of things in the world with the value that the patient information has to me. I'm going to protect it at all costs.

Frequently asked

Do small dental practices really need enterprise-level cybersecurity?

Yes. Lisa Ference noted that while dentists often think they are too small to be targets, she was shocked by a report from Techspedient showing the high number of attempted breaches on her system.

How difficult is the IT onboarding process for a busy medical office?

Lisa Ference described the onboarding as 'wonderful' and 'very simple' because Techspedient handled all the planning, hardware selection, and installation without requiring her to manage the technical details.

Can an IT provider help when different software vendors aren't working together?

Techspedient takes over vendor communications to ensure different software pieces 'play nice' together. Lisa Ference highlighted a specific instance where they intervened with a practice management vendor to prevent a security flaw during a repair.

One of the nice things about Techpediant is they are great with support. If you have an issue, a concern, they're quick to respond. They're very thorough. You're always going to be sure of exactly what it is that's going to happen and what needs to be done. I'm Lisa Parents. My practice is Clifton Dental Arts, and we are located in Clifton, New Jersey. I've been practicing for over thirty years, and I really enjoy general dentistry, so I'm involved in a lot of different aspects of dentistry. I don't focus on anything in particular. So one of the challenges I found was that being a dentist, I don't know enough about IT to know where my shortcomings are, and the techs that I was working with in the past weren't really leading me down the path to total security. At that point, I realized that something was missing, and we needed to move on to bigger and better things. The onboarding was wonderful. It really was very simple. Anthony did a lot of the work himself, and so I knew I was in good hands. He actually did all the planning as far as which machines we were going to replace and what we were going to use. I didn't have to do any of that. I wasn't interested in doing any of that. I know there are a lot of people who want to be able to go out and buy the machines they want, and that was an option. But I felt better knowing that he was choosing the proper machines that were going to give me the longevity and to be able to accomplish what we needed. He also took a good look at my office space, so he was able to get machines that fit well into the space that I had. What I found was that their monitoring was a lot more involved than I had realized was really necessary. At one point, I was having a meeting with my team, and I had asked Anthony if he could provide me with some information to share with them so that they understood the importance of the cybersecurity system that we were implementing. And he actually was able to give me a report showing how many attempted breaches there were on my system, and everybody was shocked. So one of the tangibles, I would say, is the fact that they take care of everything. We have a lot of different pieces of software with different vendors, and there are times when things aren't playing nice together. Now I have Techpediant, and they take care of everything so that we don't have to. It frees us up to be doing the things we're supposed to be doing. One of the issues that we came across is our practice management software was having an issue, and Anthony had actually gotten on the phone with the vendor, and we were there at the same time, and he realized that in the process of trying to fix the issue, the vendor was going in and ready to make some changes in my software, which would have opened up a vulnerability. And had Anthony not been there, we would have potentially had a problem, and he helped them actually to figure out what the right answer was so that they could fix the problem, and I could still be secure. I would definitely invest in the best cybersecurity IT you can find, which I would obviously say would be Techpediant at this point. There's just so much risk involved, and we've seen so much go on recently. We would think as dentists, we were small practices and that we wouldn't be a good target. They wouldn't bother with us. And we're finding over and over again that that's really not the case. It's just too much of a risk. There aren't a lot of things in the world with the value that the patient information has to me. I'm going to protect it at all costs, and that's what I would tell them is if there is one thing you want to make sure, it's that you're safe, you're secure, and your practice isn't vulnerable.
