The interview
Can you introduce yourself and your connection to the biohacking community?
I'm Cynthia Gault, I'm 66, and I have been friends with Natalie Ledbetter for a long time. She and her husband are the owners of Upgrade Labs, and she has gotten me into the community of biohacking several years ago. It's absolutely an amazing biohacking community here in Austin.
What specific health improvements have you seen since starting biohacking?
I'm just not a believer in pharmaceuticals unless it's absolutely necessary, and for me, getting into biohacking has helped me be off thyroid medicine, lose weight, be in better shape, and be the best 66 year old that I can be.
How has this impacted your daily life and physical activity?
I have grandchildren that I keep up with, and I went on a water slide yesterday on my stomach, jumping in and going down. That's after having a knee replacement six years ago. I golf four or five times a week and I am avid about getting outside.
What is your philosophy on aging and health investment?
I think using Upgrade Labs is probably one of the best things that you can do to invest in your health, mentally, physically, just every part of you. If you get into making your brain better, you're going to stay younger. That's where youth starts; it's not plastic surgery or stuff that covers up.
How does the AI-driven exercise technology work at Upgrade Labs?
It uses artificial intelligence to monitor your body. When you get on the exercise things, it can tell whether you're weak on one spot or if you haven't had as much sleep or water. The machine will be able to tell that, and it will adjust your workout for you. You can work out once a week and that's the equivalent of being in a gym 4 or 5 hours.
Which specific treatments have you found most beneficial?
They have Red Light, which helped me get through a broken arm last year. The Vibe Plate helps get your lymphatic system going. The Big Squeeze helps get inflammation out of your muscles and body. Then there is Cryotherapy if you have inflammation. There's so many great things it has done for me personally.
Frequently asked
Can biohacking help with chronic inflammation or recovery from surgery?
Yes, Cynthia Gault used Cryotherapy for inflammation and Red Light therapy to recover from a broken arm. She also credits the facility with helping her stay active and mobile six years after a knee replacement.
How does Upgrade Labs use technology to personalize workouts?
The facility uses artificial intelligence to monitor the body's condition. Cynthia Gault explains that the machines can detect if you are weak in a certain spot or dehydrated and will automatically adjust the workout intensity for optimum conditions.
Is biohacking a viable alternative to traditional pharmaceuticals?
While Cynthia Gault notes she only uses pharmaceuticals when absolutely necessary, she found that getting into the biohacking community at Upgrade Labs helped her get off thyroid medicine and stay vital at age 66.
