The interview

Can you introduce yourself and your background?

My name is Abigayle Gaspy, and I am currently in San Diego, California. I was a pre-nursing student, and I went about halfway through it. I also got my CNA certification throughout that process.

How has your experience at Vector helped your nursing career?

Every patient is very different; you can't treat them all the exact same. Vector was a huge help in that process because every single rep and every appointment is different. It taught me how to blend that difference between being a nurse and working with everyone I do currently, honing the skills I needed.

What was your financial situation like before joining Vector Marketing?

Before Vector, it was pretty basic. Like every normal college student, I was living paycheck to paycheck. I worked at Marshalls at normal hourly rates, and that entire paycheck went to necessities like gas, food, and college bills. It was pretty tight and not too much fun.

How did you find out about the position?

I found out through a mailer. I came home for summer break and found it on my bed. I was actually going to throw it away, but my sister saw it and told me her friend used to work there and I should try it out. Because of her, I'm here two years later.

What was your mindset when you first started?

I was just a broke college student during summer. I didn't really have a job and I had bills to pay. I joined the interview first, immediately got accepted, and got set up for training pretty quickly. Making money in general was all I needed, so I was willing to try it out.

Can you describe a memorable customer experience?

One of my customers in the first month had a husband and wife who actually broke out into a fight in front of me because one wanted the set and the other didn't. The husband tested a disgusting tomato from his garden with his own knife and made a mess, but the Cutco knife went right through it. He's now a repeat customer who calls me all the time to buy more.

What was the most surprising part of working here?

The best surprise was the people environment. I was a higher-level representative, winning first place for a couple of different conferences in the Western Region. Everyone was a cheerleader for each other, which was a big difference from other positions where everyone was kind of a man for themselves.

What would you say to someone considering this position?

It's a great opportunity no matter what major you are going into. It teaches you amazing communication and people skills. Sales isn't the easiest thing, but embracing that uncomfortableness makes you an outstanding, competitive person. Being able to say you ran your own business at a young age is really awesome.

Frequently asked

Is Vector Marketing a legitimate opportunity for students?

Abigayle initially considered throwing away the recruitment mailer, but joined after a recommendation from her sister. She found immediate value, staying with the company for over two years and moving from a 'broke college student' to a top-tier representative.

What skills can you learn at Vector Marketing?

Abigayle emphasizes that the role teaches essential communication and people skills, specifically the ability to handle uncomfortable situations and build a business from scratch. She notes these skills are highly transferable to other fields, including nursing.

How does the work environment at Vector Marketing compare to retail?

Unlike her previous experience at Marshalls where it was 'every man for themselves,' Abigayle describes the Vector environment as a supportive community where colleagues act as cheerleaders for one another's success.

Speaker 0: Alright. Well, my name is Abigaila Gaspy, and I am currently in San Diego, California. Yeah. So I was a pre nursing student, and I went about halfway through it. And then I got my CNA certification as well throughout that process. And something that I'm always kind of reflecting and putting into perspective is the fact that every patient is very different. You can't treat them all the exact same. They all have their different backgrounds, different levels of communication, which I think Vector was a huge help in that process with our reps. Every single rep is different. All of their appointments are different that we're working with them as well. And the interviews and everything that I do and the people that I meet, everyone is completely different. So it's kinda taught me how to blend that difference in between being a nurse and then working with everyone that I do currently. So I felt like that was a huge help. It helped me hone in on the skills that I needed. So feel like I've definitely been able to do better on Speaker 1: that level from this position. Speaker 0: No worries. So I would say that before Vector, it was pretty basic with my job and my financial needs. With every normal college student, it's kinda living paycheck to paycheck. Not too much phone going on, unfortunately. My study had to be very high with being a nursing major. And the position that did have with my other job was working at Marshall. So it was just like normal hourly rates. That entire paycheck went to necessities like gas, food, and then bills for like college and everything like that. So before Vector, it was pretty tight, which wasn't too much fun, but it was a part of life until I got here. They actually found me. I found out about the position through a mailer. So I came home from summer break and or I came home for summer break, and I found the mailer on my bed. And, honestly, I was gonna throw it away because it was just a bunch of, like, mail that I had on my bed. I didn't bother to look at it. My sister saw it, and she's like, you should try it out. My friend used to work there. And because of her, I'm here two years later. Yeah, I would say that I was just a broke college student during summer. I didn't really have a job or anything like that, and I had bills to pay. And I found that opportunity that came to me, and was still lining up a bunch of other jobs that I could try out, but I joined that interview first. I immediately got accepted and I got set up for training pretty quickly. So kind of just had faith and tried out the position. Making money in general was all that I needed. So it gave me that opportunity. So I was willing to try it Speaker 1: out and see how it went. Speaker 0: Yeah. So it was actually one of my customers from the first month on the position. And I went to their house. They were very off putting actually, even though I knew them pretty well. But it was just because it was something new for them and they wanted to help me out. And they one of them was really like, we need, like, everything that Cutco has to offer, and the other one's like, no. I don't want anything. And they actually, like, broke out into a fight in front of me, which was pretty funny because I knew them, and it wasn't that serious at all. We always say it's just knives. It's not like car insurance or anything like that. And he ended up testing out the knives with this disgusting tomato that he found in his backyard because they have a full on garden. And then he tested it out with his knives, and, of course, Cutco went right through it. It didn't make a mess or anything like that, but then he tried out his knife. It actually, like, went everywhere all over the kitchen. It went all over him and everything like that. And then from that moment on, he's kinda bought into it, but he was always testing my product knowledge. He really wanted to make sure that I knew what I was actually talking about, which I think was my favorite part about the position. Because when they test your product knowledge, but you're also having fun and you're helping them believe in the product and everything like that, I think that those are always my most amazing experiences because now to this day, he's the one that calls me all the time. He's like, are you still doing it? Because I really wanna get something again. I was like, yeah. You can go ahead and go for it. I think probably the best surprise was the people environment that we always had. I was a higher level representative when I first started out being one of the top representatives in our organization over here in the Western Region and winning first place for a couple of different conferences that we were hosting. And the best part was just the people in the room. Everyone was a cheerleader for each other. We were always supporting each other. And that was definitely a big difference for me compared to the other positions that I've held in the past and all the other experiences. Everyone was kind of a man for themselves. They didn't really bother to kind of blend together, make friendships and everything like that. In that room, I didn't feel like a stranger whatsoever. It felt like I knew absolutely everyone from my very first conference. So being able to build those great relationships was probably the best experience, and that, I think, is what really makes Spectre very different from other companies. Yeah, I would always mention that it's always like a great opportunity no matter what business that you're going into or what major that you're going into in your future. It always teaches you amazing communication skills, people skills. It tests you as well. Everyone knows that sales isn't gonna be the easiest thing in the world, but the fact that you get to put yourself in an uncomfortable position and embrace that uncomfortableness is the way that I like to look at it, is gonna make you probably the most outstanding person with any other positions that you may be looking at. Just the fact that you got to say that you did this training and you got to learn how to communicate with customers and basically build a business from scratch and launch from there, I think is really awesome. And being able to say that you were able to run your own business at such a young age or whatever age that you may be, I think makes you a very competitive person. Speaker 1: Yes, I do. Okay.
