“The job really wasn't about making money and doing the sales like most people would assume, but it really is about growing you into the person that you want to be.”
“I made a decent amount of money from that connection that I made two years ago when I first started the job and fostered that connection over the years.”
“I think one of the things I like about the flexibility with Vector as well is that you can make a bunch of money in a little amount of time just in a couple hours.”
The interview
What was your situation before starting with Vector Marketing?
Before starting with Vector, I worked at a restaurant down the street from my house in Woodbury, Minnesota. I was just hosting people to their tables and was not making great money. I heard about the job from an Instagram story and decided I wanted to try something new and get out of my comfort zone.
How did you handle the negativity or skepticism surrounding the job?
There was some negativity of people saying, 'You're selling knives, what are you doing?' People often don't have an understanding from an outside perspective. I just stuck with what I knew was going well for me, and now people congratulate me on my success and ask how they can get in on what I'm doing.
What is a favorite story or success you've had with a customer?
I messaged a woman about a presentation two years ago when I first started. She was too busy then but mailed me a check to support my hard work. I kept her in the back of my mind and checked in occasionally. Last week, she messaged me saying she needed new knives; she bought one of our bigger sets, and I made a decent amount of money from a connection I fostered over two years.
What has surprised you the most about working here?
What surprised me most was the amount of personal growth focus Vector has. I expected just a sales job to earn extra money, but I realized the community is really personal growth oriented. I learned about sales and business, but I was really changing as a person through my experiences as a sales rep, assistant manager, and branch manager.
What do you think about the flexibility the job offers?
Flexibility is a favorite for students because we can pick when we work. It requires discipline to schedule yourself, but it allows you to cater your schedule to your needs rather than a 8AM to 5PM job. You can make a bunch of money in a little amount of time, and I like the correlation that I can make more money by putting in more effort.
What would you say to someone who is on the fence about joining?
I would say just give it a shot; there's no harm in trying it out to see what it's all about. Even if you only do it for two weeks to put it on your resume, you get the experience and extra income. You never know the growth, the people you'll meet, or how it can change your life, so take that bet on yourself.
