The interview
What were your exercise and eating habits like before starting with Debra Atkinson?
Before I started working with Debra, I was over exercising, and I would do these very long, intense walks and thought I was doing good things. I think I was also undereating. I was avoiding carbs and not eating enough protein.
What were the biggest mindset shifts you experienced during the program?
Learning to believe that less is more when it comes to exercise and actually more is more when you're consuming food were a couple of big changes for me that have been really helpful.
What made you decide to commit to the full Flipping 50 program?
I actually did one of her shorter programs first. I liked her energy and her personality that shone through in the videos. Her attention to the fact that we might not all be in the prime of health, that we might have achy joints or bad knees, and the extra tips she gave on how to take care of yourself really sold me.
How did Flipping 50 compare to other programs like Weight Watchers?
I'm a longtime Weight Watchers member from decades ago. While I had success with other programs, I realized they cost me lean muscle. Having a program that focused on building muscle made Flipping 50 much more appealing and doable.
What specific physical results have you achieved in the past year?
In a year, I was able to reduce my body fat by over 4%, I was able to add 2% muscle mass and drop over 15 pounds and keep them off. Also, in my 60s, it has been possible to add muscle.
What has been the most surprising benefit of the program?
What surprised me most were the results that I've obtained and maintained. What I can do now that was almost impossible to do beforehand was eat with enjoyment.
Did you have any hesitations before signing up?
There were a couple of things that had me hesitate. One was the cost, and the second is I tend to be skeptical by nature. The cost is totally worth the investment because you have everything at home and it is very efficient from a time perspective.
What advice would you give to someone considering Flipping 50?
I would encourage you to relax into and trust the process. Take it in small, bite-sized pieces. What Debra offers is very comprehensive.
