The interview
What was your life like before 40 Years of Zen?
I felt really stuck. I felt like I didn't understand my brain and almost like my brain was working against me at times. I had a lot of chronic pain, a lot of severe brain fog, severe anxiety. And I just felt these huge blocks that were in my way and was in so much conflict because I knew that there were so many things I wanted to pursue, but I just felt like I just couldn't get through to them.
What was the catalyst that made you decide to join the program?
The last year, I've had health issues that have really been around my nervous system and my neurology and my brain. When I found out that it was all around neural feedback that was helping to optimize the brain and make it more efficient, it just clicked, because I felt like my brain is just not quite working right. I know it's brilliant, I know it's beautiful, but I feel like I'm just not tapping into it.
What did you appreciate most about the program experience?
How well taken care of I was and the other participants. I felt like we were so accommodated. Every need was already thought of or it was served if we needed something on the fly. I have a lot of chronic pain that physically makes me very uncomfortable, and the staff was always catering to every need I had. From the tech to the facilitator to the chef, everyone was really eager to help me.
What specific changes have you noticed since completing the program?
A huge decrease in anxiety. And my brain fog is almost nonexistent. The brain fog has decreased so much that before I couldn't really read—I couldn't focus long enough to read a book. And every day since I've been back, I've been reading like crazy. And that feels incredible. My pain has decreased, but also it's very dependent.
How do you feel this will propel your life forward?
The understanding that I have everything I need within me. The experience helped me tap into parts that I didn't know that I had. Where I could be overcoming pain, I could shift quickly through emotions. And I think that's going to really help me navigate life.
Why would you recommend 40 Years of Zen to others?
I feel like it is absolutely transformational. It shifts everything. I came out feeling truly changed. I am changed. Anyone that is really curious about how to optimize their brain, their body, how to be more efficient, just how to just understand themselves in general, better—I think anyone can benefit from it.
