The interview
What were your big takeaways from the brain mapping process?
I learned that my brain was busy doing a lot of non-value-added things. When I first came, they did this brain map and got this very high, high beta. Noah explained that means my brain is spending too much time on things outside of myself.
How did you realize you were spending your mental energy?
I realized that I'm spending a lot of time dealing with social media and too much time with devices and too much time on other people's problems and not enough time actually at home inside myself being in touch with myself and what I need to get done.
How has your approach to relationships and boundaries changed?
I think back with dealing with other people, it's more being far more honest about how I feel about situations and things rather than worrying about not hurting others and still being there for them but not deprioritizing myself to try to solve other people's problems.
What specific changes are you making regarding technology and distractions?
I found my phone is a big distraction for me. I'm trying to do one of the things that Tom was talking about, having like device-free every other Sunday. I think having exercises where this phone is shut down or away from me would be really healthy for me to get rid of distractions that prevent meditative states.
How did this experience impact your professional life and business vision?
I was looking at a product I was making and I was able to come up with a much better strategic vision for what that can be and maybe who to partner with to help get that launched. It shifted my vision for one of my businesses that I need to act on.
What was the context of your visit this time?
This is my second time through this program and this time I came here with my daughter. It was largely about her, but while she's on her journey and has new tools to go with it, I'm excited for me in getting a little more clarity in my mind about who I need to show up as in my life.
Frequently asked
Why can't I get into meditative states during my daily life?
David Sherrer realized that his inability to enter meditative states was largely due to constant distractions from devices and social media. By identifying these 'non-value-added' activities through brain mapping, he learned the importance of shutting down his phone to reach deeper states of presence.
How does 40 Years of Zen help with business strategy?
During his second visit, David Sherrer was able to shift his vision for one of his businesses. He developed a clearer strategic vision for a product he was making and identified exactly who he needed to partner with to get it launched.
Can I attend 40 Years of Zen with a family member?
Yes, David Sherrer attended his second session with his daughter. While he focused on his own clarity and business vision, he noted that the program provided her with new tools for her own journey.
