The interview

What was your life like before attending 40 Years of Zen?

My life before 40 Years of Zen was fairly complicated. I am a substance use counselor at the Hazelton Betty Ford foundation, attempting to finish graduate school and also trying to show up for my family when they need me.

What were your initial thoughts or questions about the program?

Before the invitation to come to 40 Years of Zen, I had a lot of questions around the effectiveness of neurofeedback working in a clinical setting. I was super curious about how neurofeedback would work in conjunction with a lot of the protocols, like supplements and some of the things that Dave has really put out in the world about how we could be most effective.

What was your impression of the facility and staff?

I think the thing is such a delight is when you pull into the compound at 40 Years of Zen everything seems perfectly tailored to the experience. It feels like from the moment you walk in the door take a sip of your first Bulletproof coffee to the introduction to what is going to manifest throughout the week. Everything is just unfurls in front of you with such ease. The staff is remarkable. The facilitators are inviting and knowledgeable.

How has the experience changed your perspective of yourself?

Since I've gone through this experience, I'm really excited about experiencing this new version of me, that sort of 2.0 version of me that I was able to manifest in the pods and in experience with a cohort that I was with is so promising. And so I'm very excited about allowing myself to experience that new idea of what I might want to do in the world and how I want to have an impact on others.

What specific shifts did you notice in your emotional state?

What shifted for me having gone through the program, is now I understand that some of my defense mechanisms and impulses have a direct correlation to places of pain and suffering that I've been carrying with me and being able to bring attention to those specific places and reimagining those interaction with others and places where I might have been impacted. And having left sort a watermark in my memory. I'm somehow released from those negative experiences now. And I feel so much lighter.

What is your biggest takeaway from the five-day program?

I think my biggest takeaway for me is that I have been holding on to a series of stories about myself that I thought were a definition of who I was and what I could do. And somehow after five days, I've been able to let those go, where at this stage of my life, I never thought that was going to be an option.

Why would you recommend 40 Years of Zen to others?

The main reason why I would recommend 40 Years of Zen is to give yourself an opportunity to imagine what can be and to understand that there's a possibility to let go of the things that limit us. And 40 Years of Zen really gives you the moment in five days.
