The interview
What challenges were you facing before joining Alloy?
I had stalled out on weight loss. I had been walking post-bariatric surgery and was getting to the point where walking alone wasn't really helping me achieve my weight loss goals.
What did you dislike about previous gym memberships?
One of the main issues I disliked with previous memberships at Lifetime or other gyms was just the price issues of personal trainers and the classes. I didn't really like the large class sizes and then strictly just having one-on-one personal training was not really beneficial to my budget.
Why did you choose Alloy over other options?
Visiting with the owner and site manager, I saw that it was a good balance for my budget versus the value I was getting with the small, purposely limited number of attendees in the classes and also the kind of one-on-one attention with the trainer there on site.
What were your initial fitness goals?
Mainly just to strengthen my muscles. I had had back issues and back surgeries and so a lot of the muscles on the left side of my body had atrophied. I knew some of it was just gonna be muscle building to repair those atrophied areas.
What physical changes have you noticed since starting?
I can feel my body still shifting. I think what weight that is coming on is actual muscle. I can feel it in my grip strength when I'm walking and just my overall stability and balance when I'm moving around during the day.
What surprised you most about the experience?
The overall ease I had fitting it into my schedule and enjoying actually going. I'm a very introverted individual, but it hasn't been as much of an anxiety-inducing experience as I had anticipated it would be.
What advice would you give to someone on the fence about joining?
I would say just go ahead and give it a try. I don't think it was a long-term contract. I think it was month to month. Invest a good month, six weeks into it. If you can make your budget work for at least a month, try it and reevaluate it then.
Frequently asked
Is personal training at Alloy affordable compared to big gyms?
Robert Darrell found that Alloy offered a better balance for his budget compared to Lifetime or other gyms. He noted that one-on-one training was too expensive, but Alloy's small group model provided the necessary trainer attention at a sustainable price point.
Is Alloy Personal Training suitable for introverts?
Yes, Robert Darrell, a self-described very introverted individual, found the experience to be much less anxiety-inducing than anticipated. The small, purposely limited class sizes made it easier for him to feel comfortable while working out.
Do I have to sign a long-term contract at Alloy?
According to Robert, the membership felt flexible, noting it seemed to be a month-to-month commitment rather than a long-term contract. He recommends new members invest four to six weeks to evaluate the value for themselves.
