The interview
What is your business and what do you do?
My name is Dane Bollwinkle. My business is called DeFi Consulting Alliance, and we split our time between Puerto Rico and Utah. Our business works as an educational and consulting platform where we help people come in and figure out how to make passive income with digital assets.
What was the situation with your paid ads before working with Black Box Social Media?
We've done a lot of paid ads. In fact, we've had times where when stuff was going really good, we were spending close to $100,000 a month in marketing spend and meta ads. And that went great until it didn't. And then things broke and it was catastrophic. We spent essentially the last 18 months trying to find the right ads team that could help us get back to where we were trying to go.
What were you looking for in a new ads team?
We were looking for solutions where we didn't have to come out of pocket with obscene amounts of money and just hope. We'd tried about five different companies in that timeframe, and most people want you to spend ten to fifteen grand and hope they can figure something out. We wanted a much more tactical approach to things that was data-driven to be able to determine very quickly what was working and what was not.
How did Black Box Social Media approach your ad strategy differently?
The thing that I liked about Curt and Nick is that we could go ahead and test with really small amounts to initially have a feeling for what was more likely to work before trying to scale ad spend. After we dialed in our offer, we could actually go in and start getting noticeable results on a very reasonable budget without breaking the bank and then really have confidence before scaling.
What results have you seen since working with them?
We're at a place where we have a diversified portfolio of ads running that are working, that are hitting our targets as far as cost per lead is concerned, and we're getting consistent revenue. With those guys' help, we had the best month that we've had as a sales team last month and in 18 months.
How is the communication and reporting with the team?
It's really pleasant to feel like you have a team in place that you can trust to actually not only monitor the ads, but be testing new things and be quick to respond. We have a data sheet that we look at every single week and we're able to measure performance. We're able to say, what levers can Curt and Nick pull and what levers can we pull on our team to be able to see improvement.
Frequently asked
How does Black Box Social Media handle ad testing without wasting budget?
Dane Bollwinkle noted that unlike other agencies requiring $10,000 to $15,000 upfront, Black Box Social Media uses a tactical approach where they test with small amounts first. This allows them to determine what works before scaling spend, ensuring the client is strategic with their money.
Is Black Box Social Media responsive to sudden changes in ad performance?
Yes. When Dane noticed a dip in leads over a weekend, he messaged the team and received a quick response explaining the tactical pause for new launches. Leads picked up significantly the following Monday as promised.
What makes Black Box Social Media different from other digital marketing agencies?
According to Dane, they avoid the 'one box fits all' approach. Instead of forcing a rigid system, Curt and Nick are consultative and flexible, leaning on the client's past experience to implement ideas that make sense for their specific business model.
