Cindy Brinson worked with Don Shurts of Keller Williams to buy and sell a home in Dayton. Don sold her long-time residence above asking price in just two days. He also saved the Brinsons money by insisting on a radon test for their new construction, which successfully pressured the builder to install a mitigation system at no cost.

The interview
What is it like working with Don Shurts?
He really made it stress free. Don has such a laid back personality that nothing seems to phase him. He just tells us the next thing to do and he answers our questions calmly and doesn't get too excited about it. His calmness rubs off on us.
How did you first meet Don and Cyndi Shurts?
I had known them for a long time and then we met at a pond club meeting again. We just knew about them and we liked them. So we decided that when we were ready that we would just call them.
What were your goals for your next home?
Our goal was to figure out what we wanted. We knew that eventually we wanted to move in different size. Originally thought downsized, but it was more of a different size. We wanted to be able to live on one level if we needed to.
How long did the process of finding and moving into a house take?
We just wanted to see what was available, but it only took about two months before we figured out we were ready. In two months we were in the house.
How did Don assist you during the search and buying process?
He just kind of led us through everything. We didn't have to just sit and think of it all ourselves. He just took a step by step by step all through the whole process of looking to buying, moving in. He had names of people we could contact for information and he just guided us.
What was the biggest challenge you faced during the transition?
For me, the biggest challenge was deciding we were going to sell our old house after we had been in it for 30 some years. When we decided to sell, I thought I had two weeks of solid work to get it ready. Don came in and said, 'Nope, don't do anything. It's fine the way it is.' And then he worked through a lady to stage it for us.
How did Don handle the inspection for your new construction home?
We moved into a brand new house and most people we talked to said do not get a radon test. Well, Don had us do a house inspection and a radon test and turns out it did need that. So he got the builder to add the system at his cost, not our cost. That saved us a lot of hassle.
What were the results of your home sale?
He sold our old house above asking price in a two-day period. So that was another huge stress relief.
Frequently asked
Should I get a radon test on a brand new house?
While many people advised against it, Cindy Brinson followed Don Shurts' advice to test her new build. The test revealed high levels, and Don successfully negotiated for the builder to install a mitigation system at the builder's cost.
How much work is needed to get a 30-year-old home ready for sale?
Cindy Brinson expected two weeks of solid work, but Don Shurts advised her that the house was fine as-is and brought in a professional stager. This approach saved her significant labor and resulted in a sale above asking price in two days.
Is it stressful to buy and sell a home at the same time?
Cindy described the process as a 'stressful whirlwind,' but noted that Don's calm personality and step-by-step guidance kept the couple on track and relieved the pressure of managing the transition.
