The interview
Who are you and where are you located?
My name is Jamela Urban, and I am in Denver, Colorado.
How did you first connect with Lauren and the Alliance?
I first met Lauren years ago when I first was starting to get into functional medicine at one of the very first conferences that I went to. Right around when I became interested in this boot camp, she was in Denver, so I met up with her and had lunch.
Why did you decide to join the bootcamp?
I was at a point in my business where I was looking to hire a business coach. I reached out to Lauren and said, 'Hey, do you know or recommend any business coaches specifically for pharmacists or functional medicine?' and she recommended her bootcamp. After seeing the modules, it aligned perfectly with what I was looking for.
What was your experience with the community and the state leader role?
I really wanted to be the state leader because I just really want to be a part of this pioneering movement for pharmacists. I was just so excited to be chosen as the Colorado State lead. I most loved the community and the calls.
What was the structure of the weekly calls?
We have a call each Sunday evening, a group call where we'd go through the module, and then once a week I had a call with my mentor. I loved both of those calls. Everyone was in different spots in their business or job setting and had great ideas.
What was the most valuable aspect of the program for your business?
The accountability. I knew each week I had these two calls and we were going to check in with, 'Where are you at? Have you done your homework? What progress have you made?' Each week I would apply what we talked about to my practice.
Can you give a specific example of a change you made in your practice?
One big thing is that I offer a membership to my clients and it's a full six-month all-inclusive membership which can be a little bit daunting. After talking to my lead and to the group, I decided that I should break that up into some more bite-sized chunks.
What is your overall takeaway from the bootcamp experience?
It's just a shift in mindset, learning a few new tools to have in our toolkits. I think this boot camp did a really good job in describing the various ways that we can all incorporate functional medicine into our current careers or potentially a future one.
