The interview
What makes the Gapin Institute approach different from other doctors?
I think the most important thing is that you have professionals that are on your side. Everything they do, there's a reason for it and they explain that reason through your test results and what you need. So it's really tailored for you.
What was your primary motivation for joining the program?
I was just getting bigger. I have a great life, we do a lot of traveling, and I was struggling and I didn't want to do that. My general practitioner recommended that I go see Dr. Gapin. I liked what they were doing so I signed up.
How has your mindset regarding lifestyle and diet changed?
Historically I've been able to drop weight but I've never been able to keep it off and I don't think I ever really learned how to change my lifestyle. I started off with a 1500 calorie-a-day diet and I thought that was going to be very difficult, but after a couple days I got really used to it. I feel like a totally different person inside my head; I'm thinking differently and making a lot of good choices now.
What has your experience been like with the staff?
The people have been fantastic. Matt's been great, Brittany's been great, all the gals at the office are great. They've been really good about being supportive and stressing all the right things that you're doing, which is very appreciated.
How important was the diagnostic testing to your progress?
Just how thorough they are has been something I've really been impressed with. They take a lot of tests, a lot of blood work—which, to me, is really important because it's one thing to see what's going on in your body from a mirror but I'm really kind of more interested in what's happening inside. To see all those changes is really exciting because I know I'm really healthy now.
What specific health improvements have you seen in your biomarkers?
The most exciting thing for me is that of all the weight that I have lost, I haven't lost any lean muscle mass. I've only lost fat. Prior to starting, everything was starting to become pre-diabetic and trending in the wrong direction. And now I'm kind of normal in everything.
How do you feel about your ability to maintain these results long-term?
I've always been afraid of 'what do I do when I'm done?' but I don't think I'm done now. I just think it's just a whole new lifestyle and I really enjoy it. With what Matt and Brittany have helped me with, I don't think this is going to be a problem going forward.
Frequently asked
Is a 1500 calorie diet too difficult to maintain?
Charlie Trafton was initially nervous that a 1500 calorie-a-day diet would be very difficult. He found it challenging for only a couple of days before it became his 'new way of doing things' and eventually felt easy.
Will I lose muscle while trying to lose weight?
Charlie reported that the most exciting part of his journey was that despite his weight loss, he did not lose any lean muscle mass. He only lost fat, which he found very encouraging compared to previous attempts.
How does Gapin Institute approach physical exercise for beginners?
Charlie was shocked at how little they required of him physically at the start. The program breaks patients in slowly so they do not get frustrated or feel like giving up.
