The interview

How did you find the experience of dealing with Geobear?

I found them easy to deal with, things were explained. I actually had a friend who is a geological expert and he said, 'That's good, that's one of the top companies or one of first companies to get involved in this sort of work.' That put my mind at rest really.

What is the background of your property and the issues you faced?

I moved to my house in 2012; it's a very old Victorian house built in 1895. On the survey it said there was historical subsidence, and I'd left it for years, but I'd noticed a couple of cracks growing towards the back of the house and I thought I'd get it investigated.

How did Geobear handle complications during the project?

There were complications, but in any house this old things always crop up that don't go to plan. They kept me informed about all that and what was happening. I had to arrange for extra surveys to come, so it all worked smoothly and it all turned up when they were meant to. Very pleasant guys.

What were your main concerns before starting the work?

The biggest concern was not knowing anything about it and assuming that everything was going to cost thousands and tens of thousands, hearing lots of bad stories about subsidence issues and underpinning. Ignorance was the worst thing. I was pretty glad that when I started researching, Geobear was one of the first companies that came up.

How long did the actual treatment take?

The actual treatment itself, once we finalized when it was going to happen, they were in and out within 2 days really. I did have some complications with the drainage—apparently the way the drains work on my property is very peculiar—but they kept me informed all the time.

What preparation did you have to do for the Geobear team?

I brought up all the decking which took a while, just to make sure they had enough space to do all the treatment that they needed. I was in constant contact with them to say, 'Have I taken up enough or isn't it too little or too much?' I didn't feel any difficulty in approaching them and sending photos.

Frequently asked

Will subsidence repair cost tens of thousands of pounds?

Phil Butcher biggest concern was 'ignorance' and the assumption that repairs would cost tens of thousands based on 'bad stories' about traditional underpinning. He found Geobear's process easy to understand and less overwhelming than expected after researching his options.

Phil (00:00) I found easy to deal with, things were explained. I actually had a friend who is a geological expert that I know and I sort of mentioned to him that I'd had these issues years ago, and I said, "I'm getting some work done and it's through GeoBear," and he said, "oh, That's good, that's one of the top companies or one of first companies to get involved in this sort of work." Hi, I'm phil, and I'm from Edmonton in North London. Well, I moved to my house in 2012 it's a very old Victorian house built in 1895. On the survey it said there was historical subsidence, and I'd left it for years, not really sort of investigating that, but I'd noticed a couple of cracks growing towards the back of the house and I thought I'd get it investigated. there were complications, but you know in any job in any house of this old You know things always crop up that don't go to plan. they kept me informed about all that and what was I had to arrange for extra surveys to come so, you know, it all worked smoothly and it all turned up when they were meant to and very pleasant guys So only positives really. Well, the biggest concern was not knowing anything about it and assuming that everything was going to cost thousands and tens of thousands, hearing lots of bad stories about subsidence issues and underpinning and all these sort of scary things. So ignorance was the worst thing. And when you start to research something like that, you think you're just going to get an explosion of different options. It's going to be slightly overwhelming. So I was pretty glad actually that when I started researching, geobear was one of the first companies that came up that I started having look at and I sort of liked what I saw in terms of reviews and I was able to understand what they were saying so I sort of, you know, progressed from there really. The actual treatment itself, once we finalized when it was going to happen and they were in and out within 2 days really. I did have some complications with the drainage. Apparently the way the drains work on my property is very peculiar. So obviously there were complications that they weren't expecting, but they kept me informed all the time. Unfortunately a few years ago my wife wanted lots of decking down so I had to... I brought up all the decking which took a while but yeah, it was just obviously to make sure they had enough space to do all the treatment that they needed to but I was in constant contact with them to say, have I taken up enough or isn't it too little or too much? so I did want to take up loads that was unnecessary. I didn't feel any difficulty in approaching them and sending photos to say, look, how much of the decade do I take I'm new to this, so it's quite hard for me to sort of understand what was going on until I discussed it with them. And actually that reassured me quite a lot cause I knew he was an he does a lot in the industry. So I was quite happy when he heard of GeoBear and he said ⁓ it was a good choice. So that put my mind at rest really.
