The interview

What was your emotional state before participating in the program?

Before I participate in this program, I might react to some people's words or actions and let them prompt my reaction. Now I've learned that whatever they want to do, you can decide your reaction. You get to choose how to react. You don't have any automatic reactions to others.

How many times have you completed the 40 Years of Zen program?

This was my third time doing it. So I'm getting to be sort of a veteran. This was new when I first did it and I said well, let's see what they got. Now I've been three times.

What were the most notable changes you experienced this week?

One of the most dramatic and fun things that's happened to me just this week is the sound of music. Just the appreciation for music is really something new. It's really great. That'd be one of the main ones other than calm, cool and collected, it was sort of a retreat for busy life.

What is your mindset regarding the present moment and stress?

I'm committed to showing up by just showing up and seeing what they got. Just living every day in the moment. One thing they said there was, everything is past. So all you got is now. I've cleared out a lot of things that can cause stress. I get pretty calm and cool.

What motivated you to start this process at age 65?

I started the whole process because I just want to optimize my remaining years. I'm 65 years old and I want to go at strong and sharp. I want to try new things for the rest of my life, always find something new and go into that.

How would you describe the state of your brain after the program?

It's hard to describe how your brain is just sharp and calm and loving. Because you're just calmer and people need a calm someone to interact with. My biggest takeaway is just the internal peace and willing to trust God with my future.
