The interview

Who are you and what is your background?

Hi, I'm Caroline Casey. I live in Perth in Ontario, and I'm retired.

What physical struggle led you to seek help?

I had been struggling with a SI joint issue for years. I was thinking about it this morning, so almost 20 years. It pretty well ruled my life. Like, it came, it went - ta-da, da, da, da.

How did Jane change your perspective on your own healing?

With Jane, she's helped me open my eyes and to realize that I can heal myself. I just have to use the tools in the toolbox. She's given us many tools. Not that challenges don't present themselves, I know what to do. I now listen to my body.

What did you learn about the connection between language and pain?

When I originally started with Jane I used to jokingly say, 'I'm my own pain in the... fill in the blank.' And Jane said, 'it sounds funny but your subconscious doesn't have a sense of humor and you're telling yourself, I'm my own pain.' Our thoughts, our speech and our feelings all affect our body.

How do you respond to pain differently now?

Now when somebody says to me, 'How are you feeling?' I say, 'Well, you know, sometimes it's talking to me.' And that's the way I talk about it. I don't get lost in my story. And if it's talking to me then I've learned to send it love.

What is the community aspect of the program like?

She's also given me a community. A community of like-minded people. In Jane's community, twice a month we get to go to group coaching. We have the ability to get together through Zoom or through Facebook. The guest speakers are always interesting.

What is your overall takeaway from the program?

It's an incredible program and a different approach in wellness. We have tools to help heal ourselves and I really feel like this is the path to health.

Frequently asked

Can mindset and speech really affect physical chronic pain?

Yes, Caroline Casey learned through the program that thoughts, speech, and feelings directly affect the body. She discovered that her subconscious took her self-deprecating jokes about pain literally, and by changing her language, she stopped getting 'lost in her story' of suffering.

What does the community support look like at The Wellness Engineer?

The program provides a community of like-minded people who connect via Zoom and Facebook. Caroline highlights that members participate in group coaching twice a month and have access to interesting guest speakers.

Is the program difficult to implement for someone who is retired?

Caroline, who is retired, found the program accessible because it provides a 'toolbox' where members can take what they need. She emphasizes that while challenges still present themselves, she now knows exactly which tools to use to listen to her body.
