Can you introduce yourself and your background?

I'm Maria Kalevitch and I have a doctorate in biology and microbiology and recently I became a Certified Functional Nutrition Counselor and I'm currently residing in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

What led you to seek help from Dr. Pedre at GUT Smart?

For about 18 months, I have been struggling with my health especially my digestive system and as you probably know he is called the America's Gut Doctor, so I'm very glad that I have a chance to work with him. My health issues started about two years ago, that's really made me to think and reevaluate the importance of wellness.

What was your initial impression of working with Dr. Pedre?

The first thing he told me, 'Maria I'm on your team, I'm your doctor but I'm also part of your team. The team is called Maria.' It was really remarkable for me to hear and gave me hope and chance to really concentrate on my health and knowing that someone is watching my back.

How does this approach compare to other doctors you have seen?

I have dealt with various doctors and both in conventional medicine and also in holistic world, functional medicine. But what's important about Dr. Pedre that he doesn't concentrate on my symptoms. He is doing his best to find the root cause of my issues and problems so there is no band aid per se but a solution, long term solution, attainable solution.

How has your physical health and mobility changed since starting?

I was in many ways, housebound in bedbound. So now I can even walk outside, previously I couldn't even do five or seven minutes. My husband was there with me but now I can walk by myself and I do that up to 45 minutes sometimes even an hour, so that's a progress.

How has this impacted your personal and family life?

That gives me opportunity to be part of my family, various events and celebrations, my son's birthday is coming soon so I will be able to go and enjoy the time with my family, that's important to me.
