Rob Basnett achieved significant relief from chronic knee pain and systemic inflammation at Healing Essence Center. By following Dr. Jonathan Glass's seasonal detoxification program, Basnett eliminated bloating and joint aches he previously attributed to aging. He now maintains a toxin-free lifestyle, performing the cleanse twice yearly to sustain his energy for hockey.

The interview

What brought you to Healing Essence Center initially?

Initially, it was my wife; she mentioned it 'cause I didn't know anything about it. What it really come down to is I just, I had been feeling bloated for a while, and not realizing what was causing it.

How did you start the detoxification process with Dr. Glass?

I had been going to Dr. Glass for maybe a year or two before we started our first cleanse, and he suggested that and gave me reasons why, and so we did. Usually that's the most difficult one 'cause you're basically cutting out everything—sugar, wheat, dairy, alcohol, caffeine, you name it.

What were your physical reactions during the first few days of the cleanse?

I never did get a caffeine headache, but what happened to me was I would get exhausted, like completely exhausted. It would take probably three to four days before that actually happened, but really what that is is I'm just detoxifying. It happens a little bit less now because we do it more often.

What is the support system like during the program?

It's fantastic 'cause once a week we'd get together and discuss what you did and how you did it. Were you 100% on the cleanse or did you go slowly? What responses did you have, how did you handle it, and did you keep going or did you quit? Jonathan's not pushy; he just says, 'Do your best.'

When did you notice the long-term benefits of the twice-yearly cleanse?

I didn't notice it for probably five years. I still play hockey, and about eight years ago at a volunteer event, someone asked if my knees, elbows, and shoulders hurt. That's when I thought about it and said, 'You know, my knees used to hurt really bad,' but then once I did the cleanse, that went away because the inflammation goes down.

How has your perspective on health and food changed?

The reality is you just gotta get rid of these toxins and stop the inflammation. There's so many people with gut issues and chronic pain, and it all stems from poor quality of food and toxins. Moving forward, we never eat fried foods; I just don't eat it and don't even crave it.

Frequently asked

Is the Healing Essence Center cleanse too difficult for someone with a busy schedule?

Rob Basnett noted that while the first cleanse is the most difficult because you cut out sugar, wheat, dairy, and caffeine, Dr. Glass is not pushy. He encourages participants to simply do their best and adjust the pace if they cannot be 100% compliant immediately.

Can a detox program help with chronic knee and joint pain?

Yes, Rob Basnett discovered that his knee, elbow, and shoulder pain—which he thought was just 'getting old'—disappeared once he removed inflammatory toxins. He realized the pain stemmed from poor quality food and environmental toxins rather than permanent injury.

What are the side effects of starting a holistic cleanse?

Rob Basnett experienced complete exhaustion for about three to four days at the start of his detox. However, he noted that he never suffered from caffeine headaches and that the exhaustion decreased with each subsequent seasonal cleanse.

Jonathan Glass is just, he's fantastic and extremely knowledgeable. Rob Basnett. I live in Littleton, Massachusetts, and I own a plumbing, heating, cooling, and electrical business. Initially, it was my wife, she mentioned it 'cause I didn't know anything about it. What it really come down to is I just, I had been feeling bloated for a while, and not realizing what was causing it. You know, it just felt like I was just kinda bloated. We talked to... I had been going to Dr. Glass for, I don't know, maybe a year or two before we started our first cleanse, and he suggested that and, you know, gave me reasons why, and so we did. Usually that's the most difficult one 'cause you- you're basically cutting out everything. I mean, you're cutting out sugar, wheat, dairy, alcohol, caffeine, you name it, you know? Not that I was, like, addicted to any of them. Even coffee, it was like, you know, I'd have one or two, but, um, I never did get a caffeine headache. S- most people did. What happened to me though was I would get exhausted, like completely exhausted, and it would take probably three days, three to four days before that actually happened, and but really what that is is I'm just detoxifying. And every time I do the cleanse, it actually happens. It just happens a little bit less now because we do it more often. It's fantastic 'cause he, you know, once a week we'd get together and discuss what you, what you did, how you did it. Were you, you know, 100% on the cleanse or did you, you know, go slowly into the cleanse? And then what responses did you have, and how did you handle it, and did you keep going or did you quit? Did you alter and such like that. Interesting enough, and I didn't notice it for probably, it might have been five years, we were doing the cleanse twice a year 'cause we made a commitment and said, "Hey, we're gonna do it twice a year, spring and fall." And I still play hockey, and it was probably about eight years ago, I was at an event, at a, uh, volunteer event, and I said... It was a Friday night, and I said to one of the guys, "Hey, I gotta leave at six o'clock 'cause I have a hockey game." And he said to me, "Wow, you still play hockey? Like, don't your knees hurt and your elbows and your shoulders?" And that's when I thought about it and I said, "You know, my knees used to hurt really bad," but then once I did the cleanse, that went away because the inflammation, you know, the inflammation goes down. When you do the cleanse and you get off of all these things that causes inflammation, then, you know, some aches and pains go away. And it's interesting 'cause I had gone to a doctor and they said, "Yeah, everything looks good." Had pain in my knee, and I was just like, "Well, I guess that's just life and getting old," but that's not the reality. The reality is you just gotta get rid of these toxins and, and stop the inflammation. The awareness is really good, plus you pay attention of what causes inflammation in you particularly because it's, not everybody's the same. There's so many people with gut issues and chronic pain issues and so on, and it's like it all stems from poor quality of food and toxins, you know? So I mean, moving forward, like I said, it's just, it's being aware of what you're eating and eliminate... Like, we don't, we never eat fried foods. I just don't eat it. Don't even crave it. If you just do it for this one thing, to just detoxify, just that. It's just we, uh, I mean, all the glyphosate that they just spray on the foods that we eat is incredible. It's awful. You get out whatever you put in. But Jonathan's not, he's not pushy. He's like, he realizes that not everybody's the same, not everybody's got that drive or self-discipline, and he s- just says, "Do your best. If you feel that you can't do this and you need to do that, then do it. Just do your best." Yeah, but he's extremely knowledgeable.
