The interview
What was your injury history before the ACL tear?
I've had a lot of injuries. I tore both of my hips. For like, a year and a half there was nothing I could really do other than, like, stop dancing, but I wasn't really going to do that. That's when Ortho brought me in and they, like, did a whole PRP thing for them; injections. And those did work.
What happened when you tore your ACL?
I'm obviously very into dance, very passionate about everything. And then I tore my ACL. I was on stage and, like, I didn't know what was going to happen. I had already been to Ortho before because I already had, like, previous injuries in my hips and stuff. And so, I went to them, like, right away.
What were your main concerns after the injury?
Obviously my questions are... 'When can I come back? Am I gonna make it? Is it the whole year for me? Like, is it over?' That was my thinking. I mean, it's like 9 months of recovery. It's not impossible to make a comeback early for coming back for Nationals, but it's not likely.
Why did you choose OrthoLasVegas for your surgery?
What made me say 'yes' to Ortho Las Vegas is they obviously know exactly what they're doing, but they're very... welcoming. They take you in, and are very kind, and like, 'We got you. Like, everything will be fine.' A lot of my friends have gone there because they also had previous injuries, and were like, 'Yeah, go to them. They're the best ones.'
What specific treatment did they offer for your knee?
So they offered the stem cells for my knee, which is like 30% quicker recovery, and it's expensive. And we were kind of on the fence because we were like, 'Well what if it doesn't work? We're gonna to pay a lot of money for this.' So we were kind of like, do we do it? And I was like, 'Yes, we do do it.'
What was the final result of your recovery?
In January my goal was to come back at the end of June to do Nationals, and I got cleared at the 4 1/2 month mark, and I was like, 'I did it.' Like, that's insane. All I did was just... like, you have to be consistent with going to PT, and you have to be consistent with all of the strengthening cause it's probably the best thing.
Why would you recommend OrthoLasVegas to others?
I would recommend them because they take you in, and will make sure, you get the best, like, help that you need and make sure your recovery is good. They keep up with everything, they make sure you're on top of everything. They're just... they're very good people.
Frequently asked
Is stem cell therapy worth the cost for ACL recovery?
Kylie Baca and her family were initially on the fence because the treatment is expensive and they worried it might not work. However, Kylie insisted on the procedure, which OrthoLasVegas noted could lead to a 30% quicker recovery, ultimately allowing her to return to dance months ahead of schedule.
How long does it take to return to dance after an ACL tear?
While a typical recovery is approximately 9 months, Kylie Baca was cleared at the 4.5-month mark. She attributes this success to the stem cell treatment provided by OrthoLasVegas and her own consistency with strengthening and physical therapy.
Does OrthoLasVegas treat hip injuries in dancers?
Yes, prior to her ACL injury, Kylie Baca received PRP injections at OrthoLasVegas for tears in both of her hips. She reported that those injections were successful and allowed her to continue dancing when she thought she might have to stop.
